Overview
This is a fixed term appointment for a new GP in our Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC). This vacancy is for candidates who are registered as a GP on the GMC register. Our UTC is co-located within the Emergency Departments (ED) at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells hospitals. Candidates must be willing to work closely with ED colleagues to provide care for minor presentations, use appropriate urgent investigations (blood tests, imaging, ECGs), assess patients who may or may not require secondary care referral, and instigate initial management when required. It is desirable that the post holder has experience working autonomously as a General Practitioner and is competent in interpreting chest radiographs and ECGs. The Trust offers a study budget and study leave to support development of these skills and others.
The UTC offers appointments all year round, 7 days per week, from 0900-0000. Patients with minor injuries and urgent illnesses are assessed and treated by our team of GPs, nurses and physiotherapists. 30-50% of all emergency department attendances are redirected to our UTC team. Our UTC clinics offer around 2000 appointments, between our sites, per week. The MTW UTC GP role is a hybrid role combining traditional community GP skills with access to immediate secondary care-based investigations to complete most episodes of care, maximising patient safety, satisfaction and efficiency of patient flow.
Please note that the job plan provided is illustrative and may be subject to variation following mutual agreement between the post-holder and the Clinical Director after appointment. The post-holder will join a team of eleven GPs in managing patients. The job plan illustrated within the Job description is what vacant shifts are available for your choosing; you may select which shifts you wish to apply for when applying for this post. Currently no other hours/days will be considered.
Location and facilities
Maidstone Hospital is a modern 410-bed facility located on the western edge of Maidstone, two miles from Junction 5 of the M20. It serves a catchment population of approximately 220,000 and sees around 50,000 A&E attendances annually. The hospital offers diagnostic services, including multi-slice CT and MRI. Specialist cancer services are a major focus, with Maidstone playing a key role in local cancer care delivery. The Kent Cancer Centre is hosted here. Tunbridge Wells Hospital, located beside the A21, opened in 2011 and features all single, en-suite rooms across its main wards.
Responsibilities
1. To provide a high standard of care to patients for whom you have clinical responsibility, including patients referred to you and those cared for by you or your team.
2. To participate in clinical and service activities to ensure a high standard of patient care across the Trust.
3. To work in close cooperation with other medical, professional and managerial colleagues to provide high quality health care to the Trust’s patients.
4. To participate in and share leadership of clinical governance of the specialty, attend governance meetings as detailed in the Trust’s Guide to Job Planning.
5. To participate actively in the Directorate Audit programme and coordinate audit activities within the department.
6. To take an active responsibility for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, training and supervision.
7. To supervise junior medical staff with consultant colleagues, supporting their clinical and personal development as per guidance from HEE and HEKSS.
8. To ensure doctors in training under supervision undertake delegated tasks within their competence and knowledge.
9. To comply with the General Medical Council’s Good Medical Practice and the Duties of a Doctor at all times.
10. To take personal responsibility for risk management and to review practice and learn from mistakes.
11. To share in the on-call rota and provide prospective cover for colleagues during leave and absences as far as practicable and clinically safe.
12. To respond promptly and efficiently to complaints related to patient care and assist the Trust in replying within the required time frame.
13. To develop and maintain effective working relations with agencies concerned with health and social care and with representatives of patients' interests.
14. To undertake an annual appraisal leading to a personal development plan, supporting GMC revalidation, and informing study leave and job planning processes.
15. To undertake an annual job plan review as outlined in the Trust Guide to Job Planning.
16. To take reasonable care for the health and safety of yourself and others and adhere to IRMER regulations.
17. To contribute to the development of clinical management protocols shared with the community and other consultant colleagues.
18. Participation in the management and future development of the Emergency Medicine service.
