Cancer Services at the Royal Sussex County Hospital and Princess Royal Hospital are proud to offer an exciting opportunity for band 5 staff nurses to apply for our part time position. This position is ideal for a SACT trained nurses or a nurse looking to become SACT trained and gaining more knowledge, understanding and progress within the specialised field of oncology nursing in a large tertiary centre. This position will consist of working on the SACT unit at both Sussex Cancer Centre and Princess Royal hospital a lot side working in the Sussex cancer centre outpatient department.

You will be working in our SACT Day Unit's, where you will be taking part in the administration of SACT, learning about Oncology malignancies and non-malignancies, their specific treatments and care. You will nurse Oncology patients to include symptom management, and administration of SACT. When working in the Sussex cancer centre outpatient department you will be working alongside the multidisciplinary team and support patients at different stages of their cancer journey including diagnosis, on treatment reviews and palliative support.

We welcome applications from those who currently hold a UK NMC registration. If you currently hold an overseas nursing qualification and require sponsorship we are not currently direct hiring Internationally Qualified Nurses.

Main duties of the job

• Regularly interact with patients/carers/relatives and all identified on list of key working relationships.
• Regularly interact and communicate with patients/carers who have diverse limitations in their ability to communicate, ranging from physical, emotional and cultural.
• Provide highly complex information to patients/carers about all aspects of the cancer disease process (diagnosis, prognosis, symptom management and when treatment fails).
• Provide highly complex information to patients/carers about all aspects of treatment (SACT, radiotherapy, venous access devices, side effects management). Using the highest level of communication and interpersonal skills and ensuring that the information is in an easily understood language.
• Demonstrate highly developed communication skills.
• Be skilled at providing reassurance and support.
• Be skilled at emphasising and communicating bad news with sensitivity.
• Be skilled in discussing difficult decisions for example terminating treatment and end-of-life issues.
• Identify the patient and carers coping mechanisms, being aware of individual strategies adopted. Encourage the individual to explore positive ways of coping accessing counselling and complementary therapy services as appropriate.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

People Management and Development
• Manage the daily activity of a busy ward/outpatient department ensuring patient and staff safety at all times.
• Support the team to monitor the quality of patient care and participate in the regular evaluation of patient satisfaction.
• Display professional accountability at all times.
• Contribute to the identification of areas for change and development.
• Encourage professional accountability in others.
• Encourage effective working relationships and the development of a cohesive nursing team working with a common philosophy.
• Support senior staff to create a suitable, supportive and safe environment for maintenance of a happy, efficient and co-ordinated team.

• Support senior staff in the nursing management of the Sussex Cancer Centre and ward areas.
• Co-ordinate on the ward, in clinics and in the SACT unit for development on a regular basis; this involves organising/supervising the nursing team, delegating work appropriately, problem solving, dealing with patients clinical telephone enquiries, working with the site team and matron regarding emergency admissions and liaising with pharmacy, pathology and the multi-disciplinary team.
• Assist with management of staffing resources to ensure maximum efficiency and effectiveness.
• Assist in setting, monitoring, auditing and maintaining of measurable standards of care.
• Participate in review and maintenance of nursing documentation relating to patient care.
• Assist in the implementation of quality initiatives that improve patient care – taking the lead for agreed areas and projects.
• Promote a culture that anticipates and addresses any patient concerns before they become a complaint.
• Be familiar with the procedure for dealing with patient/relative complaints.
• Identify risks for all personnel, patients and visitors, taking appropriate action and advice.
• Initiate trust procedure for all accidents/incidents and inform appropriate manager.
• Attend and participate in nurse meetings in all areas.

Qualifications

* NMC registered Nurse
* Experience in supervising junior staff
* Chemotherapy course or equivalent

Skills

* Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skill
* Awareness of cancer, treatment, treatment related side effects and symptoms control
* IT Skills
* Cannulation, IV administration + Venepuncture
* Competent in cytotoxic drug administration
* Knowledge of current chemotherapy regimens, policies and procedures
