About Us

UCL is London’s global university. LCCOS – Library, Culture, Collections and Open Science – provides outstanding staff, services and resources to support the world-class research, education and enterprise that is undertaken in UCL, and connects the world with UCL through innovative programming and engagement activities. LCCOS is acknowledged as an international leader in Open Science and Scholarship.

UCL Press was launched in 2015 as the UK’s first fully open access university press. In that time, it has published over 250 scholarly monographs and has built a portfolio of 15 academic journals.

UCL Press is seeking to appoint a new co-Editor-in-Chief (EIC) to run and develop its flagship multidisciplinary open access journal, UCL Open Environment (UCLOE). Applications are open to UCL academic members of staff.

Launched In 2019/2020, UCLOE Is a Multidisciplinary Scientific Journal Broadly Covering Environment-related Research, Dedicated To Advancing Knowledge And Empowering Researchers At Every Stage Of Their Academic Journey By Publishing Scientifically Robust Research. The Journal Focuses On Four Key Areas Of Research

* Planetary health
* Public health grounded in environmental factors
* The environment in which people live
* The character and functioning of the environment

As a journal with a firm commitment to open science, accountability and to reducing the barriers to equitable publishing, the journal operates a unique open peer review process via a preprint server model. The journal is free to publish in for UCL authors and funding is currently available (for 2025) to cover the cost of publishing for all other authors.

It is our aim that this unique combination of characteristics will help both researchers and those that use research to access accountable, trusted and transparently peer-reviewed science relevant to the world’s major problems (more info can be found at https://journals.uclpress.co.uk/ucloe/site/how-it-works). The journal is currently indexed in several databases including Scopus and PubMed Central and aims to publish 100 articles per year within the next three years.

About The Role

You will: Provide strategic direction and shape the journal aims, scope, and editorial policies; lead commissioning strategies; support indexing and reputation growth; Strengthen the Editorial Board, including further recruiting and empowering a team of Editors and reviewers reflective of the journal’s broad interdisciplinary scope; Support quality publishing by overseeing the triage of submissions, mentor editors, and ensure timely and rigorous peer review processes; and be an advocate for the journal by represent it within and beyond UCL, promoting its values and increasing visibility in the global research ecosystem.

This is a voluntary role open only to current UCL academic staff and the position does not offer monetary compensation.

This appointment is subject to UCL Terms and Conditions of Service for Research and Professional Services Staff. Please visit https://www.ucl.ac.uk/human-resources/conditions-service-research-teaching-and-professional-services-staff for more information.

About You

We are looking for candidates who in particular have the following experience and skills:

* An experienced researcher with demonstrated research excellence in one or more environment-related fields aligned with UCL Open Environment (here).
* A confident organiser and delegator, able to lead and grow an engaged Editorial Board.
* Someone with editorial insight and drive – ready to raise standards and build community, not just manage a workflow.
