Our busy CYP Daycare and Outpatients unit sees over 6,000 patients a year, requiring systemic anti-cancer therapy, radiotherapy, and supportive care, delivered by our team. The age range of our patients is 1 to 24 years old, making CYPDU a very unique unit at the Royal Marsden Hospital.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Plan, document, deliver, and evaluate evidence-based nursing care for patients, in conjunction with the shift co-ordinator.
2. Develop awareness and understanding of the needs of patients with cancer and the treatment modalities used within the unit.
3. Understand the roles and responsibilities involved in managing a shift under the guidance of the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse.
4. Complete initial assessments of patients’ physiological, psycho-social, spiritual, and cultural needs to ensure comprehensive care.
5. Assist in teaching patients about investigations, treatments, and home care preparations.
6. Be aware of treatment side effects and adopt problem-solving approaches to minimize adverse reactions.
7. Participate in delivering skilled nursing care, such as wound dressings, drain removal, and urinary catheter insertions, until competent.

Flu Vaccination Policy:
Given our immune-compromised patient population, staff are expected to have an annual free flu vaccination to protect patients and staff from seasonal flu, which can range from mild to severe illness.

A qualification in oncology or a related specialty is essential for Band 5 roles, with support provided for further development. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent communication skills, positive role modelling, and a commitment to team development and service improvement.
