Health Care Assistant – Ward M1

Job Summary
We are inviting applications for two Health Care Assistant (HCA) positions on Ward M1, a 30‑bed medically optimised older adult ward. Positions are full‑time (37.5 hours per week) and part‑time (32.25 hours per week). The ward supports frail older adults with complex needs, including cognitive impairment, reduced mobility, and long‑term conditions. HCAs provide high‑quality, person‑centred care under the supervision of registered nurses.
Responsibilities
* Assist registered nurses in direct patient care.
* Communicate clearly with patients, carers, relatives, and the multidisciplinary team.
* Help patients with activities of daily living, nutrition, hydration, safe mobilisation, and comfort.
* Prioritise own workload and inform qualified staff of changes in patient condition or observations.
* Escort and chaperone patients as appropriate.
* Undertake clerical duties such as filing and ordering supplies within agreed stock levels.
* Ensure availability, cleanliness, and maintenance of equipment and safe handling of patient valuables.
* Adhere to Wirral Hospital objectives, policies, protocols, and guidelines.
* Report concerns or anxieties disclosed by patients to the appropriate healthcare professional.
* Participate in ward safety huddles and raise concerns as required.
* Actively support patient comfort and assist with position changes to maintain healthy skin integrity.
Person Specification
Knowledge and Skills
* Previous experience and training in manual handling of patients using appropriate equipment.
* Understanding of promoting patient independence and ability to provide reassurance.
Personal Attributes
* Ability to work well as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
* Positive attitude and ability to act on feedback.
* Polite, friendly, approachable, and self‑motivated.
Essential Qualifications and Training
* Level 2 qualification in Health & Social Care (e.g., GCSE Grade A‑C, NVQ2) or equivalent general education to GCSE level with agreement to undertake the relevant Level 2 qualification on appointment.
Desirable Experience
* Experience working in a clinical environment.
* Experience working in the NHS.
