Assistant Team Manager - Approved Mental Health Professional (Out of Hours)

Location: Aylesbury

We are committed to supporting a centralised 24/7 AMHP service which is sensitive to meeting the complex needs of people requiring assessment under the Mental Health Act in a responsive and professional manner whilst promoting the wellbeing of a highly trained and competent workforce.

You will be expected to take an active part as a duty AMHP on the out of hours AMHP rota whilst supervising and overseeing the practice of your out of hours AMHP colleagues. You will also contribute to the wider development of the AMHP service and promote consistency of practice between the out of hours and in hours service provision.

You will be entitled to a £2,500 (per annum) AMHP allowance.

In addition to the salary advertised, you will receive a market premium of £525 per annum.

In addition, you will also be entitled to a 30% out of hours enhancement in addition to basic salary plus double time for bank holidays.


About us

The Bucks AMHP service is part of the section 75 arrangement currently in place between Buckinghamshire Council and Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust. It has recently been appraised as ‘good’ by an external audit undertaken earlier in 2025. The AMHP service is currently located within a health service setting (Whiteleaf Centre, Aylesbury) and managed by a partnership arrangement between the Council and Oxford Health.


About the role

The core purpose is to support the AMHP Manager deliver a quality 24/7 service by providing day-to-day support and supervision for out of hours AMHPs.

This post is central to the promotion of effective liaison out of hours with inpatient services, community teams, police and other emergency services.

The main duties and responsibilities of the AMHP Assistant Team Manager role are:

* To convene and undertake MHA assessments when undertaking out of hours shifts.
* To undertake the statutory roles of an AMHP as laid out in the Mental Health Act 1983 (as amended) and Code of Practice.
* Provide support and professional/reflective/management supervision to the AMHP group, particularly out of hours AMHPs.
* Support the AMHPs with their own professional development.
* To promote and engage in cross/multi agency working, ensuring strong working relationships are in place with partner agencies.
* To deputise for the AMHP Manager in his absence.
* Support the development of individuals both within Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust and Buckinghamshire Council with the process of AMHP training and eventual approval as an AMHP to the service.
* To provide guidance and management of complex and high-risk cases and ensure tasks requiring the AMHP role outside of the remit of a daily rota (e.g. Guardianship applications, displacement of Nearest Relatives) are completed.
* To identify, challenge and, where possible, redress discrimination and inequality in all its forms in relation to AMHP Practice.
* To take a professional leadership role in cases where individual’s needs/situation are complex or ambiguous, or where this is in dispute amongst those who have an interest in the individual’s welfare.
* Commitment to work with individuals with lived experience and carers to promote participation and inclusivity.

Fixed:

As a ‘fixed’ worker, you’ll spend most of your time in the same location (at the Whiteleaf Centre). Some of your working hours can be undertaken from your home environment (if it is within 25 miles of the Whiteleaf Centre).

Typically, you’ll be based in the same location as the rest of your team, because you provide a particular service from that fixed location or need access to information there.


About you

You will be a confident and experienced AMHP invested in your own personal development and of others.

The successful post holder will provide guidance and management of complex cases and ensure that tasks requiring the AMHP role outside of the remit of a daily rota are completed to a high standard.

You will receive support, supervision and training from the AMHP Team Manager and the other Assistant Team Managers. There will also be many opportunities to access AMHP refresher training from the Thames Valley Consortium, as well as national training and forums.
