The role
As a Deputy Design and Safety Manager, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. The Deputy Design and Safety Manager for the Trident Ship Submersible Ballistic Nuclear (TSSBN) programme plays a pivotal role within the Design Authority framework, ensuring the safety and integrity of nuclear and mission-critical operations throughout their lifecycle. This position carries the responsibility and technical expertise to uphold design integrity, maintain operational standards, and safeguard the performance of some of the UK's most vital defence assets.
Day-to-day, you’ll ensure nuclear and critical activity integrity within the Design Authority framework, maintaining design control and safety throughout their lifecycle.
1. Oversee and approve design and safety artefacts, ensuring proper configuration for the Reference Design.
2. Authorise manufacture, installation, commissioning, operation, maintenance, modification, and decommissioning of facilities and assets, including concessions and Basis of Operations.
3. Maintain the Reference Design with periodic reviews to uphold design integrity.
4. Evaluate deviations from the Reference Design, providing authority to instruct corrective work for compliance.
This role is full time, 35 hours per week and provides hybrid working arrangements.
Essential experience of the Deputy Design and Safety Manager
5. Ownership, maintenance and reporting on the Design Intent, Reference Design and engineering data, including Approval of design change and concessions.
6. Engineering Duty Holder for purposes of UK Legislation – including Nuclear, Radiological and Conventional.
7. Principal Designer for Construction (Design and Management) Regulations and Building Safety Act purposes.
8. Signatory in accordance with UK Certification Authority [UKCA] and Conformité Européenne [CE] requirements.
9. Delegated Design Authority for HMNB Devonport Non-Nuclear Facilities assets and operations.
Qualifications for the Deputy Design and Safety Manager
10. Must be educated to Degree level in an Engineering or Scientific discipline.
Security Clearance
The successful candidate must be a sole UK national who is able to achieve and maintain Naval Nuclear Propulsion Information (NNPPI) security clearance for this role.
