Glaucoma Nurse Specialist and Pre-operative Nurse (Ophthalmology)

A very exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and dynamic nurse to join our Glaucoma service within Ophthalmology at UHD. We are seeking an experienced NMC registered nurse with experience of working within Ophthalmology and pre‑operative assessment. The candidate must have relevant clinical experience in ophthalmology, however, specialist support and training will be provided to the successful candidate.

We are looking for a motivated person who is willing to develop and become an autonomous practitioner within the Glaucoma team, helping to meet the demands of the service and needs of the patients. They will be working within an experienced and patient‑focused multidisciplinary team.

The suitable candidate will need to demonstrate excellent communication skills, enthusiasm and must be a committed professional who strives to ensure excellent standards of care are provided to all patients.


Main duties of the job

To provide specialist nursing expertise, facilitating evidence‑based, patient‑centred care and assessment for a defined caseload of Ophthalmology patients. This may include, but is not limited to, clinics of new and follow‑up patients, post‑operative reviews and telephone follow‑up clinics.

To lead and run own nurse‑led clinics, including clinics in Swanage as required.

To participate in the development, implementation, evaluation and dissemination of eye unit service policies and protocols with respect to the Ophthalmology service.

To act as a resource and to provide education for patients and health care personnel, as directed by the Consultant and senior nurse.

Analyses and interprets patient history and examination, presenting symptoms, physical findings and diagnostic information and formulates a patient management plan using specialist knowledge.

Carries out a defined range of diagnostic tests, often using highly developed physical skills, such as slit lamp, biometry, auto‑refraction, intraocular pressure, Shirmerss test, Pachymetry test, perimetry test and systems‑based physical examination.

Uses sound judgment and analytical skills in relation to the assessment and management of patients, using critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning skills in clinical decision‑making.


Qualifications

* NMC UK Registered Nurse / HCPC registered or AP equivalent (Orthoptist)
* Foundation in Ophthalmology
* 1st level degree or working towards
* Physical Examination of the Adult Course Degree
* Ophthalmology Practitioner Training (Levels 1‑3)
* Recognised pre‑operative assessment course


Experience

* 3 years clinical experience within Ophthalmology
* Evidence of multi‑disciplinary working
* Evidence of teaching in practice
* Experience of undertaking pre operative assessment of patients
* IT literacy using a range of current and relevant packages Medisight, EPR, E‑camis
* Teaching, coaching and presentation skills
* Leadership skills (change management, planning and prioritisation, problem solving)
* Commitment to personal development and development of others
* Ability to assess need for and interpret ophthalmology related investigation and tests relevant to the glaucoma patient


Knowledge

* Developments in ophthalmology initiatives and treatments at national and local levels particularly Glaucoma, pre‑assessment and Oculoplastics
* Demonstrable knowledge and experience of working with aseptic techniques
* Ability to assess need for and interpret Ophthalmology related investigations and tests - visual fields. Sound general medical knowledge - with particular knowledge of Ophthalmic diseases
* Carries out a defined range of diagnostic tests, often using highly developed physical skills, such as slit lamp, biometry, auto‑refraction, intraocular pressure, Shirmerss test, Pachymetry test, perimetry test and systems‑based physical examination
