About the Business Unit
The Energy unit delivers services globally across sectors including hydropower, nuclear, waste, renewable, and transmission & distribution networks. We provide integrated engineering and project management services across the project lifecycle, from concept to decommissioning, supporting the global energy transition.
Overview of Role
The Energy Unit's Transmission & Distribution division is recruiting a Secondary Design Interface Engineer. Our work spans renewable power, network design, grid connections, Net Zero aspirations, and estate management planning, including sectors like renewables, aviation, data centers, healthcare, nuclear, and defense.
Job Description
The Secondary Design Interface Engineer will be crucial in designing and implementing secondary systems in HV electrical substations. Responsibilities include coordinating with stakeholders, ensuring compliance with standards, and optimizing design processes to improve system reliability and performance.
Typical activities include:
* Design Coordination with primary engineers and project managers.
* Preparing and reviewing technical specifications, drawings, and documentation.
* Preparing interface circuit diagrams, wiring diagrams, cable schedules, and room layouts.
* Calculating battery sizes, voltage drops, and cable sizing.
* Familiarity with HV plant equipment at 132kV, 275kV, and 400kV for AIS & GIS substations.
* Knowledge of SCADA systems and I/O interfaces.
* Ensuring designs comply with UK standards, regulations, and policies.
* Managing design scope, ensuring timely delivery and budget adherence.
* Conducting risk assessments and developing mitigation strategies.
* Identifying opportunities for innovation and process improvement.
* Maintaining effective communication with stakeholders, including clients and regulatory bodies.
* Willingness to travel for site visits and surveys within the UK.
Candidate Specifications
Reporting to the Project Principal or Principal Engineer, ideal candidates are Chartered and possess:
* Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
* At least 5 years of experience in secondary system design within the HV power industry.
* Strong knowledge of protection and control systems and familiarity with IEC, IEEE standards; NGTS is a plus.
* Proven project management skills and ability to handle multiple projects.
* Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with practical and innovative approaches.
* Ability to work effectively in a team and collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
