An opportunity has arisen to join the Tayside Orthoptic Department. You will be part of the Orthoptic team that consists of 9 orthoptists and 3 orthoptic assistants. We provide a comprehensive orthoptic and visual field service to the whole region of Tayside. The orthoptic service provides various clinics including general orthoptic clinics, community paediatric service in conjunction with our hospital optometrists, functional vision assessment, reading difficulties clinic, and post stroke assessment services. We work closely with 3 ophthalmologists providing a specialist paediatric service including orthoptic JIA screening, adult motility service that includes a botulinum toxin, adjustable sutures and a tertiary referral service as well as an orthoptic lead thyroid eye disease clinic. We also provide orthoptic delivered vision screening service, See4School, for the children in Tayside. The post is based at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee but would include travel to clinics throughout Tayside therefore ability to travel is essential.
We are an accredited orthoptic practice placement site and take orthoptic students regularly on placement from all 4 Universities. Ninewells is a teaching hospital and you will be involved in teaching junior doctors, medical students, nursing students and pre‑registration optometrists.
We are looking for an individual who will integrate into the team. We are a friendly, forward‑thinking team that has developed over the years. We promote team working and collaboration across all roles and recognise the valuable contribution a good skill mix can make to delivering the best quality service and improving patient care.
A diploma/degree in Orthoptics, and current HCPC registration are essential for this role. Post‑graduate experience is desirable and you should have a broad range of clinical experience and knowledge with excellent communication skills. We would consider applications from newly qualified practitioners (NQPs) as well as experienced orthoptists. NQPs would be appointed on ANNEX 21, Para 2 (ii), starting at 70% of the pay band maximum. They would be supported with mentorship over a 12‑24 month period whilst they gain the skills required to fulfil band 6 role requirements.
