This is an excellent opportunity to join the Anesthetics department at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust. The successful candidate will join a service that prides itself in effective leadership, innovative thinking, and excellent teamwork. We strive to challenge our existing working practices and to constantly improve our service to deliver best practice guidance and to ensure that our patient outcomes are successful, and they feel valued during their visits to the Trust.

The new Vascular Hybrid theatre opened in 2024 and provides the vascular service for our region, both elective and emergency. This post is suitable for those with an interest in vascular anaesthesia but also keen to remain part of the general anaesthetic team. An interest in pre-operative care and pathways, including CPET is desirable. The successful applicant will be part of the general on call team, which includes obstetric care.


Main duties of the job

The post-holder will be expected to work-up complex surgical patients in the perioperative period and be familiar with the use and interpretation of CPET. The post-holder is required to be skilled in all aspects (elective and emergency) of vascular anesthesia undertaken at ENHT; to include, endovascular & open aneurysms, carotid endarterectomy, limb revascularization procedures and renal access surgery. The post-holder should be confident in regional anesthetic techniques to facilitate surgery if this is of benefit.

The post holder will be expected to be flexible in their approach to working patterns, undertaking clinical work on any site when required. A strong commitment to the training and education of trainees and other staff members is also expected.

Person specification


Qualifications / Training


Essential criteria

* Entry on GMC Specialist Register or, be within 6 months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview or, provide GMC confirmed eligibility for entry on the Specialist Register
* FRCA or qualification of an equivalent level
* Higher Anaesthesia (or equivalent) training


Desirable criteria

* Postgraduate degree (or equivalent)
* M.R.C.P or equivalent


Previous Experience


Essential criteria

* Broad range of experience in Anesthesia for various specialties
* Experience in delivering anesthetic, general and/or regional, for the range of vascular procedures undertaken at ENHT
* Pre-assessment of complex, high risk patients for surgery
* Ability to offer and be accountable for full and independent expert diagnostic opinion
* Can evidence leading on patient safety issues and achieving a change in practice
* Demonstrate an understanding of the basic principles of audit, evidencebased practice and clinical quality improvement initiatives


Desirable criteria

* Confident with the clinical interpretation of CPET
* Demonstrable experience in a consultant role
* Experience of supervising undergraduates, doctors in training and other colleagues
* Published papers and original work in peer reviewed journals
* Demonstrable experience and participation in research


Skills


Essential criteria

* Able to evidence engagement with clinical governance and the identification of errors and the learning from errors.
* Evidence engagement with appraisal and revalidation
* Able to show situational awareness and application of good decision making
* Ability to effectively teach clinical skills
* Ability to critically appraise published evidence


Knowledge


Essential criteria

* Demonstrate understanding of basic principles of audit, evidence-based practice, and clinical quality improvement initiatives
* Comprehensive knowledge and insight regarding all the domains within the GMC standards of Good Medical Practice
