Overview
Join the Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge. The largest Department in the University, we have a long record of world-leading teaching and research across the engineering disciplines, and we continue to break new ground in response to the challenges of today. As Senior IT Engineer, you will be embedded in the Department's Information Engineering Division. The Division's work spans the boundary between traditional Computer Science and Engineering Departments, focusing on topics including intelligent interactive systems and machine learning, medical imaging, signal analysis and computer vision and robotics. These are themes driving developments in today's world, and you will be working up close with leading researchers and teachers to support them.
Responsibilities
* Serve as an experienced system administrator with a focus on Linux and practical experience of interoperability in a mixed environment. You will be embedded in the Department's Information Engineering Division alongside another Senior IT Engineer, as part of the Department's Information and Computing Services group (ICS).
* Support and develop the Division's IT estate, including Linux workstations and servers (Ubuntu), Macs and Windows, with GPU compute and mass data storage requirements; manage HPC clusters (on-premises and cloud) and large-scale file servers.
* Advise academics and researchers on solutions, hardware purchases and best practice; implement and promote cybersecurity measures across the Division in conjunction with ICS colleagues.
* Collaborate with other teams in ICS, build relationships across the Department, and participate in cross-team projects to develop ICS’s work.
* Work as part of a team, building relationships with people at all levels of the Department and contributing to a secure computing environment.
Qualifications
* Educated to degree level or with an equivalent level of experience.
* Demonstrable experience in Linux system administration and configuration management, and management of technical activities.
* Strong planning and time-management skills, with excellent spoken and written communication.
* Hands-on experience of hardware maintenance and troubleshooting.
* Ability to work as part of a team and build relationships with people at all levels of the Department.
Working arrangements
This role is intended to be full-time, Monday-Friday, but applications from candidates wishing to work part-time will also be considered.
Contract and benefits
* Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 3 years in the first instance.
