Our Commercial & Industrial division designs, fabricates and constructs structural steelwork for a variety of sectors including commercial offices, stadia & leisure, industrial & distribution, data centres, retail, and health and education.
The division has manufacturing sites in Dalton, Lostock, and Enniskillen. Each has full-service capabilities and modern manufacturing processes enabling high-quality products for various sectors. Each site has a strong market reputation and covers a wide geographical area, including Europe, setting high standards in a highly complex market.
Vacancy Details
This is an exciting opportunity to join our structured Flooring Assistant Training Programme, designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to the metal decking industry. As a Flooring Assistant, you’ll rotate through multiple departments and sites to gain hands-on experience and understand the full lifecycle of a flooring project—from planning to fabrication and site installation.
This role is ideal for someone eager to build a long-term career in construction and engineering, with structured learning, practical site exposure, and support to gain essential industry qualifications.
Key Responsibilities
Office-Based Training
* Understand the full metal decking process and departmental coordination.
* Assist in reviewing drawings, quotations, and site programs with Estimators.
* Support Detailers with drawing preparation, modelling, ordering, and coordination.
* Shadow Quantity Surveyors and assist with labour tracking, applications, and contract closeouts.
Fabrication Experience (at CMF)
* Learn how metal decking and trim packs are manufactured.
* Observe and assist with production lines, offsite cutting, and load building.
* Understand order processing from Detailers and transport logistics.
Site Experience
* Assist with decking installation tasks such as cutting, nailing, welding support, and general housekeeping.
* Work alongside Fire Watchers, Netters, and Stud Welders.
* Shadow the Operations Supervisor for inspections, audits, and site planning.
* Create trackers, site markups, and review programs/progress updates.
Required Skills
* Eager to learn and develop practical skills
* Good communication and teamwork skills
* Detail-oriented, thorough, and able to follow guidance
* Basic IT skills; CAD or design software exposure is a plus
