Technical Engineering Manager – Wind Turbine Operations & Maintenance
Role Purpose
The Engineering Manager / Technical Manager is responsible for the technical leadership, engineering governance, and performance optimisation of wind turbine assets operating under Operations & Maintenance (O&M) contracts.
The role ensures turbines operate safely, reliably, and efficiently while supporting field teams with technical expertise, driving root cause analysis, and developing engineering strategies to maximise turbine availability and asset performance.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership
* Provide technical oversight of all wind turbine maintenance and engineering activities across operational sites.
* Act as the technical authority on turbine systems including mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and control systems.
* Support technicians and site managers with complex fault diagnosis and troubleshooting.
* Lead engineering reviews and failure investigations to determine root cause and corrective actions.
Asset Reliability & Performance
* Monitor turbine performance using SCADA data, condition monitoring systems, and operational reports.
* Identify reliability issues and implement preventative or predictive maintenance strategies.
* Lead investigations into major component failures including gearboxes, generators, blades, yaw systems, and power control systems.
* Develop improvement programmes to increase turbine availability and reduce downtime.
Engineering Standards & Compliance
* Ensure all work is completed in line with:
* OEM technical standards
* UK safety legislation and industry regulations
* Company procedures and engineering standards
* Support compliance with:
* ISO 9001 (Quality)
* ISO 14001 (Environmental)
* ISO 45001 (Health & Safety)
* Develop and maintain technical procedures, maintenance instructions, and engineering documentation.
Maintenance Strategy & Planning
* Develop and optimise:
* Preventative maintenance programmes
* Corrective maintenance procedures
* Major component replacement strategies
* Support the planning and execution of:
* Crane campaigns
* Major repairs and upgrades
* Life-extension and refurbishment projects
Team Leadership & Development
* Provide technical guidance and mentoring to wind turbine technicians and engineers.
* Support training programmes and competency development initiatives.
* Assist in developing internal technical capability across mechanical, electrical, and control systems.
* Support recruitment and development of engineering personnel.
Client & Stakeholder Interface
* Act as the technical focal point for clients, asset managers, and OEMs.
* Support commercial discussions relating to:
* Major repairs
* Engineering modifications
* Reliability improvement initiatives
* Provide technical reports and performance updates to stakeholders.
Engineering Projects
Lead and support technical delivery of projects including:
* Turbine repowering and life-extension works
* Major component replacements
* Electrical upgrades and control system modifications
* Turbine performance improvement initiatives
Key Skills & Competencies
* Strong knowledge of wind turbine technology and balance of plant systems.
* Experience fault-finding across mechanical, electrical, and control systems.
* Data-driven decision-making using SCADA and condition monitoring systems.
* Strong leadership and team management skills.
* Ability to manage multiple wind sites and technical issues simultaneously.
* Excellent analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
Qualifications & Experience
* Degree / HND in:
* Mechanical Engineering
* Electrical Engineering
* Renewable Energy Engineering
* Or equivalent technical discipline
* Minimum 5 years' experience within wind turbine O&M or a similar power generation engineering environment.
Desirable Certifications
* GWO Training
* HV Awareness
* IOSH / NEBOSH safety training
