Overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated senior Clinical Scientist to become Deputy Head of the Magnetic Resonance and Ultrasound Physics Team at Barts Health. We are looking for a Scientist working as an MRSE, with previous experience in ultrasound (U/S) and an interest in developing MRI and U/S governance. We are committed to providing our patients with outstanding care and seek a clinical scientist who shares this vision.
The MRI and US team is a friendly and dedicated group that engages with Imaging throughout the organisation to ensure the safety of staff, patients and visitors. The team is involved with all aspects of the MRI equipment life cycle and the development of support for U/S scanners (~400 items). There is a strong commitment to innovation, research and development and existing links with Queen Mary University, King’s College Hospital and other Academic Trusts in the London region.
The purpose of the post is to aid the Head in the leadership of the Magnetic Resonance (MR) and Ultrasound (U/S) Physics team.

Responsibilities
* Assist the Head in responsibility for the provision of MR and U/S Physics services to the Trust and the management of the associated staff.
* Provide scientific and technical support to all MRI and U/S systems within the Trust (St Bartholomew's Hospital, Royal London Hospital, Whipps Cross, Newham University Hospital and Mile End CDC) and any additional systems under external contract.
* Support MRI and U/S research in the Trust and undertake collaborative work with associated academic institutions when required.
* Collaborate with consultant medical practitioners and leading academics to implement innovative, leading-edge clinical MR methods and U/S diagnostic techniques.
* Initiate and provide high-quality teaching and training of junior clinical scientists within national training programs and support the training of Trust staff in the safe use of MRI systems.
* Act as MR Safety Expert (MRSE) to the Trust and be the named MRSE for particular Trust sites.
Qualifications and experience
Essential
* Good (1st or 2nd class) Honours degree in a relevant subject
* Relevant MSc or higher degree
* Advanced experience in the field of MRI Physics
* Experience of supporting translating innovation in Clinical Protocols/Procedures
* Demonstrable evidence of understanding and experience of professional leadership
* Proven experience of building and working in partnership with internal and external stakeholders
* Experience of using resources effectively in a challenged environment, budget management and development of business cases
* Experience of effective collaboration with leaders of other health and care disciplines
Desirable
* PhD or equivalent experience in MRI or Ultrasound
* MR Safety Expert
* Experience in providing U/S Physics Support
* Line management experience with significant responsibility for scientific and/or technical staff
Knowledge
* In-depth understanding of relevant legislation, national standards, professional and other guidelines in MRI and U/S Physics
* Highly advanced theoretical and practical knowledge of MRI Physics with experience to act as lead MRSE in a complex Trust
* Knowledge of U/S Physics and principles of Clinical U/S guidance
* Understanding of patient and staff risks arising from equipment failure and staff error
* Understanding of Risk Assessment and Risk Management processes with experience in carrying these out
Skills
* Strategic thinker and organiser with ability to articulate a clear vision
* Ability to prioritise and manage own work; lead teams and work as part of a team
* Ability to exercise initiative within own specialist area
* Ability to communicate complex information at postgraduate level to other professional groups
* Ability to present scientific papers at national and international conferences
* Ability to train groups of other professional staff and deliver teaching on complex subjects
* Good negotiation skills and ability to handle complex and unpredictable situations
