Power Systems Modeling & Grid Engineer
Transmission Planning, Interconnection & Grid Data Systems
Location: London (preferred) Hybrid, or remote
Engagement: Full-time
About Nyxium
Nyxium is a London-based, VC-backed deep tech company building an infrastructure intelligence platform for siting, permitting, and regulatory decision-making across energy, data centres, and other critical infrastructure. The company is backed by leading European investors and supported by a global network of operators, policymakers, and technical advisors.
We integrate geospatial, environmental, regulatory, and infrastructure datasets into a unified decision system. Our goal is to move beyond surface-level GIS screening and deliver engineering-grounded, decision-ready intelligence on:
* Grid connectivity
* Capacity availability
* Interconnection timelines
* Development risk
Why this role exists
This role is critical in translating real-world power system behaviour into scalable, structured models and datasets that can power Nyxium.
What you will do
1. Technical Feasibility & Interconnection Modelling (Core)
* Evaluate shortlisted sites for:
* Technical connectability
* Transmission suitability
* Likely upgrade exposure and constraint triggers
* Analyse:
* Transformer capacity
* Substation capability
* Transmission network limitations
* Provide structured estimates of:
* Available capacity vs required load
* Interconnection feasibility likelihood
* Risk of major network upgrades
* Translate outputs into:
* Engineering-grounded feasibility tiers (High / Medium / Low probability of connection)
2. Capacity, Queue & Access Probability Modelling
* Develop methodologies to estimate:
* Probability of interconnection approval
* Waiting time ranges based on queue backlog and saturation
* Impact of clustered developments and queue congestion
* Convert real-world queue dynamics into:
* Structured probability models
* Scalable logic usable within the platform
* Move the system from:
* “Is there a substation nearby?”
* → to
* “What is the probability and timeline of grid access?”
3. Grid Dataset Structuring & Intelligence Layer (Expanded)
You will take ownership of how raw grid data becomes usable intelligence.
* Identify, source, and integrate datasets including:
* Substations, transformers, transmission lines
* Interconnection queue data
* Renewable capacity and penetration maps
* Structure datasets into usable layers such as:
* Capacity proxies
* Queue density metrics
* Congestion indicators
* Curtailment and grid strength signals
* Ensure:
* Data is standardised across markets
* Outputs reflect real system behaviour (not just theoretical models)
4. Integration of Renewable & Grid Behaviour Signals
* Interpret renewable penetration and density impacts on:
* Congestion
* Curtailment risk
* Grid stability and strength
* Ensure models account for:
* Real operational behaviour
* Not just static infrastructure presence
5. Collaboration with Geospatial & Engineering Teams
* Work closely with geospatial scientists to:
* Review and refine grid-risk proxy variables
* Define engineering-grounded thresholds for risk classification
* Identify where simplified GIS assumptions break down
* Guide engineers to ensure outputs are:
* Structured
* Map-compatible
* API-ready
* Decision-ready for clients
6. System Design & Product Integration
* Help define the grid intelligence architecture within Nyxium
* Ensure models are:
* Scalable and computationally efficient
* Compatible across US, UK, and European power markets
* Designed for product integration, not standalone analysis
* Contribute to building:
* A defensible, transparent grid feasibility framework
* Clear methodology documentation for client-facing outputs
Expected Outcomes
* Structured grid feasibility framework
* Defined methodology for:
* capacity estimation
* waiting time estimation
* probability of access
* Initial grid data schema and key datasets integrated
* Clear logic connecting:
* raw grid data → model → platform output
Required Experience
* Master’s or PhD in one of the following fields:
* Electrical Engineering
* Power Systems Engineering
* Energy Systems Engineering
* Sustainable Energy / Energy Systems
* Applied Physics (with power systems or grid focus)
* 5+ years in:
* Transmission planning
* Interconnection studies
* Utility system operations
* Strong understanding of:
* Interconnection queues and approval processes
* Grid congestion and upgrade triggers
* Capacity allocation and constraints
* Deep understanding of N-1 contingency analysis, queue dynamics, and capacity allocation processes
* Experience with tools such as:
* Pandapower, PSS®E, PSLF, or similar
* Experience working with real-world grid datasets
What we are specifically looking for
* Someone who can translate engineering knowledge into structured systems, not just analysis
* Comfortable working with incomplete data and building practical models
* Able to operate in a fast-moving, early-stage environment
* Product-minded: focuses on usable outputs, not theoretical perfection
What we are not looking for
* Purely academic or research-focused profiles
* Candidates who require fully clean datasets before starting
* Over-reliance on heavy simulation without scalable abstraction
Engagement Structure
* Start as fractional (3 days/week)
* High-impact ownership from day one
* Clear pathway to:
* full-time permanent role
Why join Nyxium
* Work on one of the hardest problems in energy and infrastructure
* Build a system that directly influences real-world development decisions
* Define how grid intelligence is operationalised at scale
* Above market compensation, 30-50% salary increases after seed/ series A round, with meaningful equity
