Job Summary
We are seeking a passionate and forward-thinking Stroke Physician to enrich our vibrant team at the Regional Stroke Centre, Northampton General Hospital. As a valued member of a high-achieving and motivated Stroke Team within Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust, affiliated with the University of Leicester, you will play a key role in advancing our Stroke Service and contributing to our 24/7 thrombolysis and mechanical thrombectomy rota.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead and mentor our resident medical staff, fostering their development and ensuring the highest standards of care.
* Expertly manage patients within the Hyper‑Acute Stroke Unit, delivering timely and effective interventions.
* Work with our experienced multidisciplinary team to provide care to stroke inpatients across 51 beds on Benham ward (Hyper acute and acute care) and Allebone ward (Rehabilitation).
* Contribute to our essential 7‑day‑a‑week TIA clinic, ensuring rapid assessment and management to prevent further strokes.
* Participate in multidisciplinary case conferences, collaborating with colleagues to provide holistic patient care.
* Share in the on‑call stroke rota (1:6, with prospective cover), providing crucial specialist input when it is needed most.
* Engage in teaching and administration, contributing to the smooth running of the department and the education of future healthcare professionals.

* Audit and clinical governance – play a key role in driving continuous improvement and ensuring the highest quality of care within the unit.
* Support the appraisal and assessment of junior colleagues, contributing to their professional growth.
* Collaborate with fellow consultants to further develop and enhance our Stroke Service at NGH, shaping its future direction.
Remuneration & Contract
Salary: £109,725 to £145,478 per annum (pro rata).
Contract: Fixed term, 12 months. Working pattern: Full‑time.
Qualifications & Training
* GMC registration
* Relevant specialty degree qualification
* Possession of MRCP
* At least 3 years’ experience of acute general medicine
* Experience of hyperacute stroke care and thrombolysis
* Experience of stroke rehabilitation
Desirable
* MD, PhD or other higher degree
* Specialist registration or within 6 months of CCT date
Teaching / Audit / Quality Improvement
* Experience of audit in stroke medicine
* Experience of teaching junior staff
Academic Achievements & Research
* A specialist interest in an area that complements the other consultants in the department
* Research projects related to the specialty
