A vacancy has arisen for a Wing Commander or Squadron Leader (Aircrew – Pilot / WSO (Any)) to serve as SO1 Next Generation Operational Training Staff Officer (NGOT) - Next Generation MUSTANG SO1 Staff Officer in Capability Delivery (Combat Air), Air Capability based at RAF Waddington, on Full Time Reserve Service (Limited Commitment) Terms and Conditions of Service (TCoS), with an initial proposed start date of 27 April 2026 (or earlier/later, subject to candidate status). This is an exciting opportunity to play a pivotal, leading role in delivering 4 projects within Portfolio MUSTANG; Next Generation Red Air (NGRA), Next Generation Surface Electronic Warfare Training (NGSEWT) and Next Generation Collective Training Exercise Control (NG CT Excon). Initially the role will focus on finalising the concept phase for all 4 projects and will require flexibility and adaptability to move between projects on a daily basis (all the projects are at different stages of the lifecycle and therefore the individual project requirements will pose different challenges). Artifact generation will also be an important element to this role ensuring that milestones concerning scrutiny and approvals are met. The future capability will provide essential operational readiness training (ORT) for Front Line Force Elements, principally the Royal Air Force but also to benefit wider Defence. The successful applicant will take the 4 projects from the start of the Assessment Phase and steer it through the first 5 years of the acquisition CADMID Cycle. Working with a multi-disciplinary team of service personnel, civil servants and contractors, the role will be hybrid and office-based by mutual agreement, but there will also be opportunities for some national and international travel. The post-holder’s responsibilities will be as follows: Acting as the Project Manager for the Next Generation all 4 projects. Supporting the generation of Requirements documents such as the SRD, CONUSE. Drafting approvals and other documentation such as OBC, FBC, Options. Acting as Deputy Portfolio Director for the MUSTANG Portfolio (Pf NGOT). Ensuring that project-level risks are identified, assessed and managed by DLOD, and escalated to portfolio level if necessary. Ensuring that Combat Air Programme Level 0 and Level 1 schedules contain accurate and up-to-date synchronised delivery plans, showing key activities, milestones and decision points. Developing and maintaining close working relationships as required with Air Cap Strat, Air Cap Del, Combat Air Force, ASWC, HQ 1 Gp, HQ 11 Gp, DE&S (ADEWS DT), Dstl and Industry. Providing Air Cap SME input into appropriate Air Capability Audit, Management and Development. Developing professional knowledge, skills and attitudes which bring benefit to the role and enhance role effectiveness. Supporting the HQ Air Cmd and Air Capability battle rhythm of meetings as required. Supporting Hd and AH CA in maintaining key stakeholder relationships across Air, other TLBs, Partner Nations & Industry and informing them of new technology. Supporting the other projects within the Next Generation Operational Training MUSTANG Portfolio.
