Salary: Highly Competitive Plus Benefits
Contract: Permanent, full time
Reporting to: Director of Electrical and Software Engineering
Your role in the mission:
Type One Energy is seeking a Senior Plasma Diagnostic Scientist to lead the development of neutron-based diagnostics for stellarator plasma experiments. This role will be responsible for the conceptual design, modeling, implementation, and deployment of neutron diagnostics that support plasma physics research, machine protection, and operational control.
The successful candidate will work at the intersection of plasma physics, nuclear engineering, and diagnostic instrumentation, collaborating with plasma physicists, computational scientists, and engineering teams to deliver diagnostics that enable accurate measurement of fusion neutron production and plasma behavior.
What you’ll need:
Diagnostic Design and Development
* Lead the conceptualization, design, construction, and deployment of neutron diagnostics for stellarator plasma experiments.
* Define diagnostic requirements to ensure measurements support scientific objectives, plasma control, and operational monitoring.
* Develop and evaluate neutron detection systems, including detector selection, shielding design, and integration with experimental infrastructure.
* Ensure diagnostic systems meet performance, reliability, and safety requirements in a fusion research environment.
Modeling and Analysis
* Develop and implement neutronics models and simulations to predict detector response and optimize diagnostic placement.
* Utilize Monte Carlo neutronics tools such as OpenMC to support diagnostic design and interpret experimental data.
* Perform radiation transport and detector response analysis to support both diagnostic design and machine protection strategies.
Experimental Support
* Contribute to the planning, execution, and analysis of plasma experiments involving neutron measurements.
* Analyze neutron diagnostic data to support plasma physics studies and operational insights.
* Collaborate with experimental teams to refine diagnostics and improve measurement capabilities.
Collaboration and Leadership
* Work closely with plasma physicists, diagnostic engineers, and computational teams to ensure successful integration of diagnostic systems.
* Provide technical leadership in neutronics and neutron diagnostic methodologies.
* Contribute to technical documentation, publications, and presentations to the broader fusion research community
Required Qualifications
* PhD in Nuclear Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
* 5+ years of post-doctoral or industry experience in neutron diagnostics, radiation detection, or neutronics modeling.
* Proven experience designing and implementing neutron detectors in nuclear environments (fusion or fission).
* Strong experience with neutronics simulation tools, including OpenMC or equivalent Monte Carlo radiation transport codes.
* Experience working in experimental nuclear or plasma research environments.
* Strong analytical, problem-solving, and collaboration skills.
Preferred Qualifications
* Experience with neutron diagnostics for deuterium–tritium plasma measurements.
* Familiarity with diagnostic techniques used in fusion devices such as tokamaks or stellarators.
* Experience with detector technologies such as scintillators, activation systems, fission chambers, or proportional counters.
* Background in fusion plasma diagnostics and experimental campaigns.
* Experience integrating diagnostics with data acquisition and control systems.
