Overview
Kirklees Museums and Galleries (KMAG) is seeking a passionate and organised Senior Curator to lead a pivotal collections project as part of Our Cultural Heart (OCH). You will lead a team of assistant curators in cataloguing, packing and moving a collection of approximately 200,000 objects from current stores and displays to the new museum venue and stores. The role is based at Tolson Museum with some cross-site working in Huddersfield and surrounding areas. This is a temporary contract running until 31 August 2029.
Responsibilities
* Lead a major inventories and decant project for a large, varied collection including items from bird skins to bus tickets.
* Manage a team of assistant curators in cataloguing, packing, moving, and documenting objects, including hazardous materials and challenging environments.
* Ensure collections care, documentation, safe handling, and movement of objects; support development of documentation backlog.
* Contribute to community engagement, exhibition content development, design, gallery fit-out and installation for the planned museum opening in 2029.
* Support consideration of cultural bias in cataloguing and work to make collections more relevant to diverse audiences.
What We’re Looking For
* Experienced in museum and gallery collections care, with knowledge of documentation standards and collections software.
* Knowledgeable in digital collections development, with experience in digitisation processes and managing digital records to enhance public access and support long-term collections care.
* Organised and methodical, with a practical approach to project management and team leadership.
* Collaborative, able to work with teams, diverse communities and partners.
* Detail-oriented, ensuring accuracy and consistency in collections documentation.
* Physically capable, with active, hands-on work in varied environments.

The role is based in Kirklees Museums and Galleries, an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation (ACE NPO) for 2023-26.
