Senior public health practitioner for adult mental wellbeing and suicide prevention

The role

Joining our well-established and dynamic team as a passionate and skilled Senior Public Health Practitioner for Mental Wellbeing and Suicide Prevention, you will be supported to develop your career in Public Health. We lead ambitious, evidence-based programmes that support adult mental wellbeing, prevent suicide, and reduce inequalities in health outcomes across the county. Working collaboratively with partners from the NHS, voluntary and community sector, local authorities, and people with lived experience, we deliver meaningful, measurable change for Hampshire residents.

Responsibilities

You will lead and coordinate key programmes within the adult mental wellbeing and suicide prevention portfolio, including:

  • Leading delivery of the Hampshire Mental Wellbeing Strategy and the Hampshire Suicide Prevention Plan, working across sectors to coordinate impactful multi‑agency programmes.
  • Overseeing and developing initiatives supporting adult mental wellbeing, including programmes focused on money and mental health, creativity, nature, green and blue spaces.
  • Providing strategic oversight of the Hampshire Men’s Suicide Prevention/Mental Wellbeing programme and the development of targeted interventions.
  • Leading commissioning and delivery of mental wellbeing and suicide prevention training (e.g., Connect 5, Suicide First Aid).
  • Shaping and delivering the adult mental wellbeing communications plan, including content management for the Mental Wellbeing Hampshire website.
  • Providing specialist public health advice to commissioners and partners, supporting evidence-based, outcome-focused service design.
  • Managing relationships across NHS, local authorities, voluntary, community and social enterprise partners and people with lived experience to deliver collaborative improvements.
  • Acting as the Public Health lead for a designated Districts Health & Wellbeing Partnership and other identified strategic partnerships to enable local action regarding public health matters.
  • Visiting other locations within Hampshire as required; you must have the ability to travel as necessary.

Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree in a Public Health related field.
  • Significant public health knowledge, practice and experience within population-level public health.
  • Substantial project and programme management experience.
  • Experience of partnership working across multi‑agency settings, including working with communities and people with lived experience.
  • Excellent analytical skills, with the ability to interpret and clearly present complex datasets, to ensure an evidence-based approach resulting in measurable outcomes across organisations.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, influencing and relationship building skills across diverse professional groups.
  • Understanding of local authority and the social and political environment.
  • Significant public health knowledge, practice and experience within adult mental wellbeing/suicide prevention and population-level public health - desirable.
