Overview
We are looking for two dynamic and motivated Consultants Gastroenterologist to join our friendly and enthusiastic gastroenterology team at the County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust (CDDFT).
This is an opportunity to join a highly motivated gastroenterology team in providing a comprehensive service of the highest quality. The service is looking to expand its sub speciality interests in IBD and Liver disease; however, we would welcome interest from candidates with interest in any sub speciality areas of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Successful appointees will join the existing 13 consultants (plus 2 Consultant Endoscopists) in the delivery of high-quality provision of inpatient and outpatient Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Endoscopy, and Clinical Nutrition services to this large Trust, incorporating University Hospital of North Durham, Bishop Auckland Hospital and Darlington Memorial Hospital. The post-holder will participate in the gastroenterology consultant of the week on call, including out of hours GI bleed on call or G(I)M on call.
Job specifics The basic contract is for 10 programmed activities (PAs), with elective outpatient work, endoscopy, and inpatient care. There is currently a 1:5 Gastroenterology ward commitment to cover inpatient activity, during which time all elective commitments are cancelled. The job plan is indicative and negotiable to accommodate aspirations, special interests, or part-time working. There is no requirement to do G(I)M, and the job plan includes GI bleed on calls.
Responsibilities
The postholder(s) will be based at their nominal base site with a commitment to in-patient and out-patient services as agreed in their Timetable and Job Plan. They will:
* Undertake clinical work in conjunction with colleagues to maintain and develop gastroenterology services and specialist skills; plan future developments with the team.
* Provide comprehensive clinical care to patients, in-patients and outpatients, and to general practitioners in County Durham and Darlington area.
* Cover colleagues in their absence to ensure continuous patient care.
* Be accountable for resource use and participate in clinical governance and clinical audit as part of the Trust and Directorate policies.
* Supervise junior staff as Clinical/Education Supervisors and contribute to postgraduate teaching and training of all staff levels.
* Participate in CPD, Continuing Professional Development, and maintain evidence of ongoing professional development.
* Contribute to 7-day specialty service delivery where practicable and deputise for colleagues during leave or sickness as far as practicable.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential
* Experience in Gastroenterology, Endoscopy and G(I)M; proficient in Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy.
* Experience supervising, training and teaching trainees; evidence of career planning through appraisal.
* Evidence of NHS management skills and ability to organise and prioritise work; ability to delegate to trainees/non-consultants.
* Demonstrated leadership and teamwork; ability to work with colleagues in the NHS and with external agencies.
* Strong teaching commitment for undergraduates, junior doctors and nurses; active participation in undergraduate education and CME/CPD.
* Excellent communication, interpersonal skills; ability to handle sensitive communication and patient feedback; commitment to confidentiality and ethics.
* Willingness to participate in department research projects and lead academic development as appropriate.
Desirable
* Experience liaising with community services and service development; research experience or clinical effectiveness work.
* Training in sub-specialty areas complementary to current consultants.
Statutory Registration and Professional Standards
* Full and specialist GMC registration with licence to practice; CCT (or within 6 months of attainment) or CESR pathway.
* UK registration and eligibility requirements in line with NHS Careers guidance.
Skills and Knowledge
* Good clinical skills with ability to offer expert clinical opinions across gastroenterology services.
* Awareness of patient safety, audit proficiency, and ability to use IT to enhance patient care.
* Ability to solve problems and make timely decisions under pressure; flexible, non-prejudicial team player.
Employment Details
* Salary: £109,725 to £145,478 per annum (YC72 Payscale), pro rata for part-time.
* Contract: Permanent; Working pattern: Full-time.
* Location: Darlington Memorial Hospital NHS Trust; University Hospital of North Durham; Bishop Auckland Hospital; other community sites as appropriate.

* CCPD (CPD) funding and annual appraisals are part of the contractual arrangements.
* Purpose of posts includes 7-day service delivery and on-call requirements; on-call for GI bleed and day-to-day gastroenterology on-call arrangements.
