Job Description:

Salary: £38,205 - £44,263 per annum (starting salary will be in the region of £38,205 - £39,347 p.a.)

Full time, fixed-term appointment to 31st August 2026

Based in Liverpool with international travel

We have an exciting opportunity for a self-motivated Post-Doctoral Research Associate to join the Clinical Sciences team in Liverpool. As the first institution of its kind in the world, dedicated to education and research in tropical diseases, it’s an exciting time to join LSTM as we enter our 125th anniversary year in 2023.

Primarily the successful candidate will be required to support the design, delivery, and evaluation of person-centred mixed methods TB research, including related to addressing the social determinants of TB and evaluating TB diagnostic test combinations, within two large research consortia: LIGHT (Leaving no-one behind: transforming Gendered pathways to Health for TB) and Start4All (Start taking action for TB diagnosis).

LIGHT is a cross-disciplinary global health research programme funded by UK aid, led by LSTM working with partners in Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Uganda and the UK. LIGHT aims to provide new evidence on the effectiveness of different gender-responsive pathways and approaches to health for those with TB in urban settings. The initiative will contribute to improved health, socio-economic and equity outcomes and efforts to stop the spread of TB. The successful candidate will work with partners to develop and conduct a comparative intersectional analysis to explore how social determinants influence inequities in health, healthcare access, and healthcare provision across Nigeria, Malawi, Uganda and Kenya

The Unitaid-funded Start4All Project is a $13 million LSTM-led research consortium working with partners in Bangladesh, Brazil, Cameroon, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, and Vietnam. Start4All aims to increase TB detection through equitable access to optimised TB diagnostic test combinations. The successful candidate will coordinate activities between LSTM, partner countries, the Stop TB partnership (Geneva), WHO, and the funder Unitaid. Activities include engagement with key in-country and international stakeholders, including through key informant interviews, work with the project management and implementation teams to ensure the successful and timely delivery of study activities, and support data managers to present data to policy makers at national level and WHO.

The post-holder will initially work across both consortia with 40% of working time allocated to LIGHT and 60% allocated to Start4All consortia. This ratio may change over the course of the post depending upon consortia priorities.

Key responsibilities are (but not limited to):

* Support the design of effective integrated strategies for the sustainable, acceptable, and affordable case detection, care and treatment of TB
* Work collaboratively to support on-going social determinant health systems research
* Preparing and facilitating workshops
* Develop a shared bibliography resource and update with relevant literature relating to the social determinants and consequences of TB, and combinations of TB diagnostics
* Carry out other tasks relevant to the postincluding where necessary policy briefs and communications
* Support with the delivery of the LIGHT capacity strengthening and safeguarding strategies
* Manage and lead key informant interviews, focus group discussions and participatory workshops and disseminate the information to all stakeholders

The ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work as an integral member of a multi-disciplinary, multi-national research team. You will have well-developed research skills with the ability to effectively present research findings in oral and written format. You will also demonstrate:

* PhD in a health or health-related science discipline
* Experience in conducting implementation research, and research in the social sciences, health economics, and international health
* Experience of working on research into the social determinants and consequences of health
* Experience in academic paper writing/evidence of published paper authorship and international presentations
* Understanding of quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods study design, data collection, and data analysis

(Please refer to the job description and person specification for the full list of essential and desirable criteria)

Benefits of joining LSTM:

* Generous occupational pension schemes
* Government backed “cycle to work” scheme.
* Affiliated, discounted staff membership to the University of Liverpool Sports Centre

Closing Date: 14th August 2023 at 1 pm (UK time)
