Job Overview

APs will provide clinical leadership and direction for the multi professional team in the management of the acute medical patients. It is expected that they will lead ward rounds, direct the management of patients, perform practical procedures, teach both junior medical and other staff, attend multidisciplinary meetings, take part in the governance activity of the department, participate in the management and administration of the service and liaise with other professionals both within and outside the Health Board as required.


Main duties of the job

* The Acute Medicine consultants are responsible for ‘real time’ consultant reviews of new admissions throughout the day.
* Patients are seen in SDEC, AMU or ED depending on capacity and clinical need.
* In addition to the two consultants working 08.00-16.00, two additional consultants join the team at 14.00, working until 21.00.
* The average number of new admissions between 12.00 and 20.00 varies from 30 to 45 patients.
* To ensure the provision of a first class clinical service.
* To provide effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialty.
* To sustain and develop teaching and research wherever appropriate.
* To undertake all work in accordance with the Health Board policy and procedures.
* To conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Division’s and Health Boards Service plans.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

This position involves Regulated Activity with adults as defined by the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act (amended by the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012) and the following checks will be undertaken following any conditional offer:

* Enhanced check with barred list information, including an adults barred list check

Applicants must hold or be eligible to hold full registration and a licence to practice with the GMC.
