Job overview

This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced and motivated pharmacist to develop specialist clinical skills by joining the pharmacy team supporting the surgical directorate at Morriston Hospital.

Morriston is one of the largest acute surgical centres in Wales, delivering high-volume, high-acuity care across a wide range of specialties including general surgery, trauma and orthopaedics, urology, ENT and plastic surgery.

This role provides the opportunity to work across the surgical footprint, gaining experience in complex perioperative medicine, pain management, antimicrobial stewardship, and the optimisation of parenteral nutrition for patients with specialist nutritional needs.

You will be fully integrated into dynamic multidisciplinary teams, supporting patients through expert medicines optimisation, clinical review, and safe, timely discharge planning.

As a Clinical Pharmacist, you will play a key role in delivering safe, effective and patient-centred pharmacy care, while contributing to service improvement, digital innovation and the development of junior staff. This post is ideal for pharmacists looking to take the next step in their clinical career, with structured support, independent prescribing opportunities and access to further professional development.

Be part of an innovative team at the heart of surgical care—and help shape the future of specialist pharmacy services at Morriston.

Main duties of the job

1. Work collaboratively with pharmacy colleagues, clinicians, nursing staff, and the wider multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality pharmaceutical care to surgical patients.
2. Provide a predominantly ward-based clinical pharmacy service, supporting patients from admission through to discharge with medicines reconciliation, optimisation, and discharge planning.
3. Deliver and supervise a range of medicines management services, ensuring safe, timely, and effective use of medicines across surgical areas.
4. Identify opportunities to improve pharmaceutical services within surgery and contribute to the development and implementation of strategies that enhance efficiency, clinical quality, and patient satisfaction.
5. Provide proactive, evidence-based medicines advice to prescribers to support safe, effective, and cost-efficient prescribing practices.
6. Offer clinical leadership and mentorship to junior pharmacists, foundation trainees, and pharmacy students, supporting their development through supervision, teaching, and training.
7. Participate in the pharmacy dispensary rota, contributing to the safe supply of medicines and supporting the wider pharmacy service as needed.
