Overview

As a registered Anaesthetic Practitioner, you will be an accountable and autonomous practitioner to act in the best interests of your patients at all times and take personal responsibility for your actions and decisions. You will be responsible for patient assessment, planning of care, giving and supervising safe and compassionate care, and evaluating the effectiveness of care.


Job responsibilities

* Assess, plan, and implement high quality, safe, compassionate and effective perioperative care for patients, in line with scope of practice.
* Ensure risk management / safety strategies, Trust policies and departmental procedures are adhered to in the delivery of patient care.
* Demonstrate a sound theoretical understanding and practical application of evidence-based perioperative care standards in line with national recommendations and clinical guidance (e.g., NICE, AfPP).
* Ensure patient safety strategies (e.g., WHO surgical Safety / 5 steps to safer surgery) are implemented consistently and where appropriate, contribute to the development of new initiatives which support the improvement agenda.
* Promote dignity and respect, ensuring the patient is cared for in a way that meets their expectations and maximises patient experience.
* Maintain accurate, comprehensive and comprehensible records of care provision delivered in accordance with legislation, protocols and guidelines.
* Understand and commit to the professional expectations of registration (NMC / HCPC), ensuring clinical activities are undertaken within scope of practice.
* Effectively communicate with patients, service users and all members of the multidisciplinary team in a collaborative and professional manner; implement different communication techniques / strategies when communicating sensitive information or where there are barriers to understanding.
* Coordinate the clinical activity of the operating session, working with the multidisciplinary team to ensure perioperative care is safe, effective and delivered efficiently to promote utilisation of theatre capacity; this will involve day to day supervision of theatre staff.
* Contribute to a positive learning experience by undertaking teaching activities to support the development of staff and students within the perioperative setting; this includes promoting good practice and providing supervision to learners.
* Use professional knowledge to support clinical advice as well as the maintenance and improvement of perioperative standards.
* Accountable for maintaining standards of practice within the perioperative environment, promoting a professional, patient centred approach to care provision.
* Evaluate the effectiveness of care by conducting audits to inform future practice, Trust policies and departmental procedures.
* Responsible for reporting clinical incidents and adverse events to senior staff, as well as completing incident reports (DATIX) to support timely investigation and resolution.
* Maintain clinical practice by keeping up to date with local/national policies, developments and initiatives relevant to professional area; utilising knowledge to inform current and future practice.
* Undertake Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities commensurate to the role and scope of practice; maintain professional portfolio to support the assessment / achievement of CPD by relevant regulatory bodies (NMC / HCPC).
* Encourage and facilitate the generation and implementation of new initiatives within the clinical environment to support improvement for the benefit of patients, service users and colleagues.
* Responsible for identifying strategies to support personal and professional development; supported by line manager to achieve ambitions.


Person Specification


Qualifications


Essential

* First level registered nurse or registered Operating Department Practitioner
* Current registration with either NMC or HCPC
* Accredited post registration qualification in Anaesthetics or Post Anaesthetic Care (as appropriate to role)
* Evidence of continuing professional development


Desirable

* Intermediate Life Support / Paediatric Intermediate Life Support (Anaesthetics and Post Anaesthetic Care roles)
* Teaching / Assessing / Mentorship qualification
* Completion of a validated, university accredited, Surgical First Assistant programme of study to support extended scope of practice


Experience


Essential

* Experience in the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care, using an evidence-based approach
* Experience of understanding and implementing (adhering to) Trust policies, departmental procedures and local / national guidelines
* Experience of working collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team to meet the needs of all service users
* Experience of undertaking / recording CPD activities commensurate to the role, including keeping relevant logs to support annual appraisal / validation of extended role competencies


Desirable

* Experience across a broad range of specialities in 1 or more perioperative discipline (Anaesthetics, Scrub and Post Anaesthetic Care)
* Evidence of supervising junior staff and leading clinical teams
* Evidence of supporting colleagues / mentoring learners / facilitating learning within the perioperative environment
* Evidence of post registration CPD and recent experience as a Surgical First Assistant / ability to demonstrate specialist knowledge / competence to undertake Surgical First Assistant role


Knowledge and Skills


Essential

* Willingness to develop skills in the perioperative setting; demonstrates effective written and verbal communication skills, particularly where there are barriers to understanding
* Maintain up to date knowledge of relevant local and national guidance / standards
* Ability to undertake role / problem solve using clinical expertise and experience, guided by appropriate trust policies / standard operating procedures / guidelines and best practice
* Ability to escalate concerns when additional support / decision making required
* Basic IT skills - word, excel, power points, emails


Desirable

* Theoretical knowledge / understanding of the Surgical First Assistant role and scope of practice
