Principal Psychologist, Men\'s MHTR Clinical Lead

Job Overview

This post is hosted by Central North West London NHS Foundation Trust and will work alongside clinical leads across East London NHS Foundation Trust, North East London NHS Foundation Trust and Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust. The role leads and develops a newly commissioned pan-London Men\'s Mental Health Treatment Requirement (MHTR) service to reduce custodial sentences and improve wellbeing for men in the criminal justice system with mental health needs. MHTRs offer courts an alternative to short custodial sentences and aim to prevent reoffending by addressing underlying vulnerabilities and improving quality of life. The service will increase use of primary care treatment requirements as part of a community sentence, providing psychologically informed interventions and advice.


Main duties

* Lead on the development and implementation of the Men\'s MHTR service; provide management oversight and clinical supervision of the team.
* Oversee quality and performance, including quarterly reporting to commissioners.
* Work as a jobshare with other service leads and collaborate with partners to deliver the service across London.
* Have oversight and sign off of court directions, including signing court directions for NLFC colleagues during periods of leave.
* Liaise with key stakeholders to ensure effective working relationships.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities

* Lead on development and implementation of the Men\'s MHTR service; provide management oversight and clinical supervision of the team.
* Oversee quality and performance, including quarterly reporting to commissioners.
* Work as a jobshare with other service leads and collaborate with partners to deliver the service across London.
* Sign off court directions and support NLFC colleagues during leave periods.
* Maintain relationships with key stakeholders.


Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria

* An honours degree in Psychology accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS).
* Doctoral level training in clinical, counselling or forensic psychology or equivalent, including psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan development psychology (BPS accredited).
* Evidence of significant post-qualification specialist training and experience in a relevant area of clinical practice.
* HCPC Registered Practitioner Psychologist.
* Completion of supervisor training course.

Desirable criteria

* Pre- or post-qualification training and qualifications in research methodology, staff training or similar fields.


Experience

Essential criteria

* Substantial experience as a qualified clinical psychologist at a highly specialist level or as agreed with the Chief Psychologist.
* Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment across outpatient, community, primary care and inpatient settings.
* Experience with diverse client groups across the life course and capable of maintaining professionalism under distressing circumstances.
* Experience in teaching and training; experience representing psychology within multidisciplinary care; leadership and supervision of trainees and staff.
* Experience leading service design or improvement projects; advanced knowledge in at least one specialist area (e.g., psychotherapy, neuropsychology, risk assessment, clinical supervision).
* Ability to work within multidisciplinary settings; strong leadership and governance capabilities.

Desirable criteria

* Awareness of institutional dynamics; research/publications in relevant issues; trauma-informed approach; understanding of court processes and current sentencing procedures.


Skills, knowledge and abilities

Essential criteria

* Advanced skills in complex psychological assessment and intervention; ability to communicate complex information effectively.
* Consultation skills for professionals and non-professionals; doctoral-level knowledge of research design and multivariate analysis.
* Broad clinical knowledge and IT skills; ability to teach and train others; strong clinical governance and risk management capabilities.
* Knowledge of models of assessment and treatment of offenders; ability to work with highly challenging cases including offending, self-harm, and violence.

Desirable criteria

* Knowledge of specialised psychological therapies for difficult-to-treat groups; ability to apply knowledge creatively to develop new initiatives; ability to write reports for varied audiences, including courts and service purchasers.
