Job description
Prospero Teaching is recruiting for an experienced Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) or Mentor to join a specialist provision in Fareham (PO16). This setting supports secondary-aged pupils with complex needs, including Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) and Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC). The provision offers a therapeutic and highly personalised approach to education, focusing on emotional wellbeing, life skills, and academic development.
Role Overview
This is a hands-on, rewarding role suited to someone confident in working with pupils who present with challenging behaviour. You will be responsible for delivering lessons, mentoring pupils, and supporting their holistic development both in the classroom and in the wider community.
You must be a confident driver, happy to transport pupils to and from school and support community-based learning activities such as life skills sessions, vocational placements, and outdoor education.

These areas are highly valued in the curriculum and contribute meaningfully to pupil engagement and vocational development.
Experience with SEN/SEMH is desired but not essential, provided you have a strong understanding of SEN and trauma-informed practice. You must be confident in managing and de-escalating verbal behaviours, using a calm and relational approach.
Job share arrangements of two or three days per week will be considered for the right candidate.
Key Responsibilities
8. Deliver one-to-one and small group teaching across a range of subjects
9. Plan and lead engaging, differentiated lessons tailored to individual needs
10. Provide pastoral support and act as a trusted adult for vulnerable learners
11. Work independently with pupils in the community to support life skills
12. Teach Functional Skills English and Maths
13. Offer mentoring and promote emotional resilience
14. Collaborate with therapists, teachers, and external agencies to develop personalised learning plans
Essential Requirements
15. HLTA qualification or relevant experience
16. Confident in lesson planning and delivering tailored learning
17. Skilled in behaviour management and de-escalation strategies
18. Comfortable with lone working in the community
19. Natural ability to form relationships with pupils who present with challenging behaviour
20. Must be a driver with access to a vehicle and willing to transport pupils for school pick-up/drop-off and community-based learning
21. Must be available Monday to Friday, 08:00-16:30 or 08:30-17:00
22. Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willing to apply)

Salary & Benefits
25. Actual salary range: £24,000 – £28,000 per annum
