An 18 month temporary opportunity is available for a Network Management Engineer based at the South West & Wales Control Centre, Lamby Way, Cardiff. Reporting to the Control Centre Operations Manager, this full-time role may offer the opportunity of hybrid working when the successful person is competent in the role. You’ll be responsible for the successful planning of outages in an NGED area with due regard to system security and whole-business operational requirements, also supporting the Control Centre by determining the specific running arrangements for system faults and emergencies. As part of the role, you’ll also consider generator curtailment and network constraints in respect of outages, and work to produce the year-ahead plan, whilst considering 5- and 10-year planning. Successful candidates must have a minimum of a Level 4 / HNC in Engineering that includes some electrical modules Evidence of your qualifications will be required prior to appointment. *Depending on experience, you may initially be appointed at a lower salary until all relevant courses and training are complete. Main Responsibilities The responsibilities of the specific role will include: Assessing System security and actions necessary to maintain optimum security on the whole electrical distribution network. Ensuring NGED compliance with Grid and Distribution Code in respect of outages and outage management Carry out bespoke power flow studies in the Company recognised study tools in order to assess the impact of outages on the network, identify constraints, curtailment and determine mitigation. Actively look to reduce the impact outages place on HV/EHV connected embedded generators and customers for both demand and load to the period of least regret in order to reduce curtailment. Assist in the re-assessment of the outage programme with respect to system faults, short-term working requirements and any necessary contingency plans. Coordination and developing short- and long-term outage management strategies with National Grid Transmission and NESO, Generating Stations, neighbouring DNO’s. Co-ordination of outages with boundary customers and DNOs including the bilateral exchange of information with NGET and NESO and considering impacts on neighbouring DNO Networks Working with NGED Major Projects and NESO to produce the year(s) ahead plan for all outages in line with policy, Grid and Distribution code Maintain and update Site Responsibility Schedules (SRS’s) when changes are made on the network for NGET, Generating Stations, DNO or Customer sites Review and communicate feedback or queries on Technical Approval requests from Primary Network Design and area teams Ensuring that SQC scheme requirements and proposed running arrangements are identified and passed to Sequence Engineers to assist the facilitation of outages Ensuring all external stakeholders are effectively managed and communicated with, including all connected customers and generators / generating stations Effective communication and coordination with the DSO in all activities Ensuring all outages have effective and up-to-date Emergency Return-to-Service plans Other duties as requested to ensure, and contribute to, the successful overall operation of the Control Centres. The Ideal Candidate Knowledge or experience of electrical systems or networks is desirable for this role, this could be from planning or operational experiences. As the post you are applying for attracts a National Security Vetting clearance there are further eligibility requirements, information can be found on the gov.uk website. To meet national security vetting requirements you will normally need to have been resident in the UK for at least 5 years for Security Clearance (SC) prior to the date of application.
