Apprenticeship CPCS Mobile Crane Operator
(Combined With Slinger Signaller)
Sparrow Crane Hire is actively looking for applicants to undergo a comprehensive training apprenticeship program to become CPCS A60 Mobile Crane Operators.
Do you have an interest in developing the skills for operating machinery and performing lifts of various items, from domestic hot tubs, through to the lifting of the hull of new luxury ship? No two days are the same as cranes are utilised to lift a multitude of heavy items that cannot be lifted manually. As a crane operator it is very helpful if you also train to be a slinger signaller, assisting with the securing of loads and signalling to the operator to ensure safe lifting. This is separate qualification which goes hand in hand with being a crane operator. There could also be the opportunity to train to operate compact cranes, alongside mobile cranes. Compact cranes are cranes with up to 10te lifting capacity that are either crawler or spider cranes, operated with a remote control.
What skills does a Crane Operator require?
* Good physical skills, in particular good co-ordination to operate the machinery skillfully and safely.
* Have good listening skills and pay attention to instructions.
* Be thoughtful of the wear and tear on machinery and be able to maintain the crane in good repair by careful use.
* Be able to remain calm and consistent, if working under pressure.
* Be prepared to learn new tasks and extend and improve your skills, progressing after the initial training.
* Have basic computer skills to build upon.
What does the job of a Crane Operator entail on a day to day basis?
* Carrying out daily checks of the crane for safety.
* Driving the crane to site, always arriving punctually so allowing adequate time to get there early.
* Undergoing site inductions to familiarise yourself with the sites rules and regulations.
* Working to the method statement, under the direction of the lift supervisor on site - setting the crane up on outriggers in the required position and following the guidance of the slinger signaller’s directions for lifting and lowering of the items being lifted.
* Politely liaising with the customer at all times, ensuring repeat business.
* As a slinger signaller, you will occasionally be working at height.
* Driving home or to accommodation if staying away to complete a longer job.
The Apprenticeship
We are offering full CPCS training for both Mobile Crane Operator and Slinger Signaller. The duration of formal training for these two roles combined is around 2 weeks. The training would also include HGV training if you do not currently hold a Class 2 heavy goods driving licence. The cost of the training would be paid for by us in return for a 2 year work commitment. In the event you decided to leave before the end of two years, you would be required to repay a proportion of the costs on a sliding scale.
