Mortuary Assistant

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust offers a key role within the Mortuary department, supporting a team of technicians and staff.
Job responsibilities
The Mortuary Assistant will carry out day‑to‑day mortuary and post‑mortem administrative work, assist in patient care, liaise with internal and external service users and families, and ensure compliance with HTA and SOPs. Key duties include:
* Administrative support for mortuary and post‑mortem processes.
* Care of deceased patients and coordination with families.
* Liaising with external and internal service users.
* Maintaining Hutch area and facilities in ready condition.
* Adhering to health and safety, Caldicott, and GDPR principles.
* Providing compassionate communication with bereaved relatives.
* Participating in continuous improvement and research projects within the Trust.
Person specification
Qualifications, knowledge and experience
* Experience in a busy administrative environment.
* Customer facing experience.
* ECDL or equivalent.
* NVQ3 in Administration or working towards.
* Ability to present information and use judgment to provide support.
* Empathetic approach to enquiries and sensitive situations.
* Previous administrative experience in a similar setting.
* Capacity to compose correspondence and reports.
* Ability to cope with sensitive information in a bereavement setting.
* Understanding of Caldicott principles and GDPR.
* Empathy and emotional intelligence for difficult situations.
* Clear and sensitive communication with diverse service users.
* Knowledge of confidentiality and information protection.
* NHS or public sector experience.
* Experience working with funeral directors or coroner’s service.
* Knowledge of patient management systems and medical terminology.
* Understanding of the coronial system.
* Good working knowledge of mortuary practices.
