Job Summary

Would you like to join a passionate and forward thinking School Nursing Service to deliver high quality public health nursing that promotes and improves health inequalities to school aged children in Southend?

The Southend School Nursing team is expanding! We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic school nurse who is SCPHN qualified or who is due to qualify soon. We want you to become part of our innovative, developing and dynamic team within the Children, Young People & Families Public Health (CYP&FPH) Service.

As a SCPHN School Nurse working for Southend City Council you will have access to SAPHNA corporate membership, you will be able to continue paying into your NHS pension, claim professional fees back and benefit from the local authority pay award each year.


Main Duties

You will work within a skill mix team, working closely with partners such as Health Visitors, Schools, GPs and Social Care, providing seamless care to the children, young people and families of Southend. You'll also have an important role in recognising and protecting vulnerable children as well as using innovative ways to communicate with the Southend population such as ChatHealth and the use of social media.

The successful candidate will work within an allocated caseload of schools ensuring the delivery of safe, effective and high quality services to school aged children and families, using research based evidence to inform practice with agreed professional standards. The post will require the school nurse to travel between schools within Southend.

Job Responsibilities

To work as part of a team leading the Healthy Child Programme. The role of the SCPHN School Nurse is to raise awareness of and identify unmet health needs, to initiate, develop, implement and evaluate plans of care. The SCPHN School Nurse will work within a defined area, assessing need, delegating and supervising work within the team. SCPHN School Nurses promote community engagement, early intervention, health promotion, advocacy, empowerment, social inclusion and reduction of health inequalities.

The SCPHN School Nurse works in partnership with children, young people, families, schools, communities, primary care, statutory and voluntary services and other partner agencies.

SCPHN School Nurses use and establish networks within the community to inform, influence and implement policies which affect health outcomes.


Person Specification – Essential

* Current full UK driving licence and car
* Ability to travel across the city to various locations such as schools, homes, family centres and community venues
* Ability to carry equipment e.g. scales
* Manual dexterity required e.g. to be able to manoeuvre from floor to standing / climbing stairs etc
* Driving positive change – future focused, adapts to change, embraces new technologies and ideas
* Trust and respect create mutual trust, remove barriers, collaborate and listen respectfully
* Strong leadership, leads by example, encourages team motivation, challenges bad behaviour, respects views, open, transparent and supportive

Experience – Essential

* Experience of maintaining accurate, contemporaneous records
* Experience of producing written reports/statements when required
* Experience of multi‑agency working & inter‑agency working
* Evidence of innovative practice
* Recent school nursing / community experience
* Experience of working with children and young people
* Experience of working within a community setting
* Experience of working with child protection procedures
* Experience of delivering health promotion / education on a one‑to‑one basis and within groups


Qualifications – Essential

* Nursing Midwifery Council registered nurse (any branch)
* Specialist Community Public Health Nurse – School Nurse
* Evidence of continuous post‑registration education and training


Qualifications – Desirable

* Practice assessor course
* PSHE course


Knowledge – Essential

* Level 3 safeguarding
* Evidence of research‑based practice
* Demonstrate a professional approach to updating clinical knowledge and practice
* Awareness of national and local priorities within children’s services
* A sound working knowledge of child development and parenting issues
* Knowledge of health promotion relating to children and families
* Understanding of key priorities for children’s services
* Knowledge of the Healthy Child Programme


Knowledge – Desirable

* Experience of supervising students / junior staff members
* Counselling training
* Family planning training
