Job overview

The Post Holder will be required to demonstrate self-motivation, the upholding of
professional standards, be conscientious and well organised in their approach to the
job.
The duties will include contributing towards providing a Medical Equipment
Management service, ensuring that all the medical equipment is managed to the
correct standard over all the Trust’s sites.
The job will include operating the medical equipment asset register (currently the
Planet FM system).
It will be essential to ensure all the planned preventative maintenance (PPM), repairs
and other equipment work is carried out to the correct standard and completed on
time.
The Post Holder will be required to assist with safety alerts/ clinical incidents and
take responsibility when required.
The Post Holder will be required to communicate with Trust staff at all levels and
attend multidisciplinary meetings, as and when required.
The Post Holder will provide technical guidance to Users, Estates Staff and Service
Contractors in the resolution of complex issues regarding medical equipment


Main duties of the job

* To liaise with other Healthcare professionals
* The Post Holder will be expected, on a day to day basis, to organise their work and other less senior members of staff
* To maintain an up to date knowledge of the medical equipment used within the Trust and be able to provide the full range of advice/ services expected within a medical equipment management service
* To ensure the technical safety of the medical equipment and that it is within the prescribed specification as laid down in the relevant statutory documents.
* To maintain an up-to-date knowledge of current standards, mandatory regulations and guidelines relating to medical equipment.
* To operate the medical equipment asset register to ensure all work is processed efficiently and in line with procedures.
* To ensure there are either computer or written records of all work undertaken.
* To evaluate new medical equipment and to undertake the inspection, electrical safety testing and documentation prior to its use.
* To carry out technical modifications on medical equipment as per the manufacturers agreed instructions.
* There will be a requirement to carry out work on medical equipment within patient areas
* There may be a requirement to work on live (test) equipment that is subject to exposed electrical supplies and/ or hazards.
* To manage and maintain the necessary stock levels of items of spares and supplies.
* There may be a requirement to work on medical equipment that is subject to contamination of biological hazardous substances.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

* To liaise with other Healthcare professionals and managers, clients and
external organisations in the resolution of multidisciplinary issues.
* The Post Holder will be expected, on a day to day basis, to organise their

AFC JME-115-17 Medical Equipment Engineer Band 5
* To appraise and monitor new and existing service contracts, ensuring they
are adequate and provide the appropriate cover for the medical equipment in
question.
* To maintain an up to date knowledge of the medical equipment used within
the Trust and be able to provide the full range of advice/ services expected
within a medical equipment management service.
* To ensure the technical safety of the medical equipment and that it is within
the prescribed specification as laid down in the relevant statutory documents.
* To maintain an up-to-date knowledge of current standards, mandatory
regulations and guidelines relating to medical equipment.
* To operate the medical equipment asset register to ensure all work is
processed efficiently and in line with agreed procedures.
* To ensure there are either computer or written records of all work undertaken.
* To assist when required in the process and action of all relevant safety
bulletins and clinical incidents with respect to medical equipment and on
occasion to work with other Pennine Care Staff in dealing with Trust wide
incidents.
* To assist in the evaluation and trials of new medical equipment and to
undertake the inspection, electrical safety testing and documentation prior to
its use.
* To write concise and accurate technical reports when required to do so.
* To carry out technical modifications on medical equipment as per the
manufacturers agreed instructions.
* There will be a requirement to carry out work on medical equipment within
patient areas.
* There may be a requirement to work on live (test) medical equipment that is
subject to exposed electrical supplies and/ or electrical hazards.
* To manage and maintain the necessary stock levels of items of spares and
supplies, and to order and receive such spare parts and supplies in
accordance with Departmental and Trust policies and procedures, being
aware of budgetary implications when placing such orders.
* There may be a requirement to work on medical equipment that is subject to
contamination of biological hazardous substances, such as bodily fluids,
respired gases, blood etc.
* To ensure that the routine administrative procedures necessary for the
smooth running of the service are satisfactorily completed in a timely manner.
* To be conversant with the Trusts Health & Safety policy and ensure it is
adhered to by both yourself and any staff.
* To keep up-to-date with all relevant Trust policies and procedures and to
ensure they are adhered to.
* To work with the MEMS Manager in the continual development and
improvement of all existing procedures and departmental quality
requirements.

* Attend lectures, seminars and training courses, where such a need is
identified and disseminate gained knowledge to other members of staff where
applicable and ensuring to maintain personal Continuing Professional
Development (CPD).
* To ensure that the Trust wide Decontamination policy is strictly adhered to.

Education


Essential criteria

* HND in Engineering plus experience to degree level.


Desirable criteria

* Associate/ Member of a relevant Professional Body
* Frontline Supervisory/ Management Training


Experience


Essential criteria

* Proven post qualification experience within a Medical Equipment Environment
* Specialist experience in the Service/ Repair of a range of Medical Equipment


Desirable criteria

* Experience of working within an EBME or Medical Physics Department
* Experience of working within a Department operating a Quality System
* Experience of Managing Contractors
* Experience of organising and leading a team


Knowledge


Essential criteria

* Knowledge of the current MHRA publication “Managing Medical Devices”
* Knowledge of the requirements for safety and essential performance relating to the standard EC60601-1
* Knowledge of the different types of Medical Equipment used within the NHS
* Knowledge of the principles of Decontamination with respect to medical equipment
* Good theoretical knowledge of Electronic Engineering
* Knowledge of Health & Safety requirements
* Knowledge of operating Computerised Maintenance Management Systems


Desirable criteria

* Knowledge of the process for carrying out Risk Assessments on Medical Equipment
* Basic knowledge of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering
* Knowledge of publications such as MDA Device Publications, Hospital Technical Memorandums etc
