New Role Job Title: Director of DevOps Reporting To: VP Technology Delivery Department: Technology Delivery Location: Newcastle, UK NE3 Hybrid Working 3/4 days per week office based Salary : Competitive As Director of DevOps, you will be responsible for the overall management of Hubexo’s AWS cloud estate and its team of Cloud Engineers around the world. You will spend your time focussing on building a high impact cloud engineering function that enables Hubexo’s Software Engineers to regularly deliver value to customers in a secure and reliable environment. Your core activities will involve: • Cloud infrastructure strategy and vision: Develop the overall strategy aligned with business objectives, including the integration of FinOps/ DevOps culture, and appropriate use of cloud infrastructure. Set clear goals for performance, cost, efficiency and innovation. • Team leadership and mentorship: Lead the DevOps team, providing guidance, setting objectives, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. Mentor cloud engineers in best practices around AWS cloud infrastructure and automation. • Collaboration with development teams: Work closely with development teams to design and implement infrastructure that supports application needs. Ensure developers can deploy and manage their environments efficiently using AWS tools (e.g., EKS, ECS). • Security and compliance: Ensure that AWS services comply with security and compliance requirements, including encryption, access control (IAM), network security, and monitoring. Regularly conduct security audits and implement security best practices (e.g., AWS WAF, Shield). • Cloud cost management and optimisation: Oversee cloud costs and usage, ensuring alignment with financial goals. Implement cost optimisation strategies such as right-sizing instances, identifying unused resources, and applying reserved instances or spot instances effectively. Further Responsibilities • Develop and implement the overall strategy for cloud operations. • Coach the DevOps team to work closely with Tech Delivery teams to design and implement infrastructure that supports application needs. Ensuring Software Engineers can deploy and manage their environments efficiently using AWS tools (e.g., EKS, ECS, Docker). • Implement and promote Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using tools like Terraform, ensuring infrastructure is automated, consistent, and version controlled. • Help design and manage infrastructure that scales efficiently to meet demand. Support implementing high-availability architectures using features like auto scaling, elastic load balancing (ELB), and Amazon Route 53. • Implement robust monitoring solutions and develop an incident management strategy. Including automating alerts and response procedures for any issues in the AWS estate. • Develop and maintain disaster recovery and business continuity strategies using AWS services (e.g., multi-AZ deployments, AWS Backup, or cross-region replication). • Serve as a bridge between Tech Delivery, Solutions Architecture, Operations, Finance, and IT Security teams to ensure alignment and smooth delivery of services. • Support development teams in the setup of their DevOps practices through activities such as CI/CD. • Set up governance practices that ensure the secure and compliant use of cloud resources. Define policies around access control, data retention, and auditing. • Implement systems and tools that track and report real-time cloud usage and costs across the organisation. This includes generating reports that provide insights into spending by team, application, or project. • Manage relationships with cloud service providers (e.g., AWS) on optimal setup. • Establish a FinOps culture to ensure appropriate cloud cost or cloud financial management is effective and in place. • Implementation of FinOps practices: policies adapted and reporting on cost/ consumption. • Team engagement: satisfaction and retention statistics • Change lead time: efficiency in development flow from commit to production. • Security compliance: successful compliance audits. • Service uptime and mean time to restore: indicators of system reliability and response readiness. • Execution of cloud strategy roadmap milestones: on-time delivery of strategic projects. The job holder may also be asked to undertake other duties outside of this job description that are commensurate with their skills and experience, including tasks delegated by the Director of Software Engineering and other management staff. Qualifications & Experience: (E – Essential; D – Desirable) Proven experience in cloud infrastructure management (E) Expert knowledge of AWS services (e.g., EKS, ECS, EC2, S3, IAM, CloudWatch, VPC, Route 53, Lambda, RDS) (E) Strong experience with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform and AWS CloudFormation (E) Track record of implementing and scaling CI/CD pipelines in cloud-native environments (E) Experience with implementing cloud security frameworks and controls (e.g., ISO 27001, NIST) (E) Practical knowledge of FinOps practices and tooling (e.g., AWS Cost Explorer, CloudHealth) (E) Relevant certifications such as AWS Certified DevOps Engineer – Professional, AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional (D) Strong stakeholder communication and vendor management experience (D) Demonstrable experience in leading cross-functional teams and fostering DevOps/FinOps culture (D) Familiarity with observability tools (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, ELK stack) and incident management processes.
