Role: Head of Contemporary Programmes, Royal School of Needlework (RSN)
Location: Hampton Court Palace, East Molesey, Surrey. A minimum of 3 days per week on site; some hybrid working may be arranged.
Salary: £48,000 – £50,000 per year
Overview: The Head of Contemporary Programmes is a new post created at an exciting time of growth. You will be a confident, creative and customer‑focused leader responsible for developing and delivering RSN\'s non‑accredited, leisure embroidery programmes, including short courses, the International Summer School, and online leisure courses. You will aim to generate income from these offerings while balancing RSN\'s heritage with contemporary embroidery practices and positioning RSN as a leading organisation for creative and leisure embroidery.
The role leads the day‑to‑day management of the RSN\'s Short Courses, International Summer School and Online leisure courses. You will shape a dynamic and sustainable programme to appeal to a wide range of learners, from beginners to experienced stitchers, and work to broaden participation and extend reach through digital learning.
Key responsibilities:
* Develop and lead the core contemporary programmes strategy with colleagues
* Lead the development and delivery of contemporary embroidery and creative programmes aligned with RSN\'s vision and values
* Provide strategic leadership for leisure and informal courses to ensure a high‑quality student and customer experience
* Collaborate on sales and marketing strategies for RSN\'s contemporary programmes
* Drive innovation in course design to grow income, profit and reach
* Widen access to RSN\'s leisure programmes to new and diverse audiences
* Oversee planning, delivery and evaluation of contemporary embroidery programmes, including short courses and the international summer school
* Undertake market research to identify new target markets for commercial products and services
* Identify and develop new opportunities, test through pilots, and develop robust business plans for each income stream
* Analyse competitors and RSN offerings to inform strategy
* Collaborate with staff and tutors to ensure outstanding customer experience
Line management:
* Direct line management of the Tutor Programme and Short Course Manager and On Demand Course Administrator
Person specification
Essential:
* Educated to degree level or equivalent professional experience in a creative field
* Experience leading a contemporary/creative function within arts, heritage or creative industries
* Evidence of current or past work in creative programming or practice
* Strong market awareness and ability to translate trends into opportunities
* Significant experience in programme and project management with delivery to deadlines and budgets
* Strong digital awareness to support commercial operations across channels
* Interpersonal skills to persuade, inspire, influence and collaborate across teams
* Strong numeracy and the ability to manage budgets and monitor finances
* Experience leading staff in a small team with flexibility and imagination for short- and long-term objectives
* Ability to manage budgets effectively to meet financial targets
Desirable:
* Experienced embroiderer or art textiles professional
* Teaching experience in a relevant field
* Awareness of sustainable practices in arts and craft education
* Strong relevant networks
Working for the RSN
Pension and benefits: Our defined contribution pension scheme can be joined after three months in post. Your contributions of up to 3% of salary will be matched by the RSN (maximum RSN contribution 6%).
Location: The RSN is based at Hampton Court Palace, East Molesey, Surrey. Hybrid working is available; three days a week in the office. Some travel within the UK may be required.
Working hours: 35 hours per week. Holidays: 23 days per annum, plus bank holidays and an additional shutdown between Christmas and New Year.
Probation: This post is subject to a six‑month probation period.
