Mechanical Design Engineer
Location: Saffron Walden, Essex
Salary: £40,000 - £50,000 (depending on experience)
Hours: Monday to Friday (flexible working available after probation)
The Opportunity
We're working with a well-established and growing engineering business that designs and delivers highly specialised, bespoke solutions for a wide range of clients.
Due to continued growth and expansion, they are now looking to recruit a Mechanical Design Engineer to join their team.
This is a varied, hands-on role where you'll be involved in the full project lifecycle—from initial concept and design through to site surveys and installation support. It's ideal for someone who enjoys combining technical design with real-world project involvement.
The Role
As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you'll be responsible for designing bespoke engineered solutions and supporting projects from concept through to completion.
You'll work closely with internal teams, clients, and external contractors to ensure designs are practical, compliant, and delivered successfully.
Key responsibilities include:
Designing bespoke mechanical solutions based on client requirements
Producing and managing detailed drawings using CAD software
Supporting projects through the full lifecycle, from concept to installation
Liaising with clients to understand requirements and provide technical input
Coordinating with manufacturing, installation teams, and external contractors
Attending site visits for surveys and supporting installations where required
Carrying out dimension checks and ensuring quality standards are met
Interpreting construction drawings and integrating them into designs
Maintaining accurate drawing records and documentation
Working with suppliers and supporting procurement of project components About You
We're looking for someone who combines strong mechanical design skills with a practical, project-focused mindset.
You'll ideally have:
Experience in a Mechanical Design Engineer or similar role
A background in designing bespoke or engineered-to-order solutions
Experience using CAD software (AutoCAD, Inventor, or similar)
A good understanding of manufacturing processes and materials
The ability to read and interpret technical and construction drawings
An appreciation of mechanical fixing methods and basic load considerations
Strong communication skills and confidence working with clients and teams
A proactive, hands-on approach with the ability to manage your own workload
You must have a valid UK Passport Additional Requirements
Full UK driving licence
Willingness to travel to sites across the UK and occasionally overseas
Eligibility to obtain UK security clearance What's on Offer
