Job Summary
Under the supervision of a registered nurse, the Healthcare Assistant (HA) in Ward 23 will support a range of clinical and general duties to deliver high‑quality care for patients with respiratory diseases such as COPD, asthma, pleural effusions, bronchiectasis. This is a permanent, full‑time position within a 33‑bedded ward.
Key Responsibilities
* Participate in all aspects of patient care, focusing on personal hygiene and grooming.
* Provide patient toileting needs, supporting incontinence management and promoting continence.
* Record patients' fluid intake and output using fluid balance charts.
* Prepare, serve and assist with patient meals, drinks and snacks, and record dietary intake as per care plan.
* Support patients' mobility through exercise and use of mobility aids.
* Assist in pressure sore prevention and safe movement and handling within mandatory training guidelines.
* Retrieve specimens for ward or laboratory testing.
* Remove cannulae, catheters and nasogastric tubes as directed.
* Dress non‑complex wounds and perform naso‑gastric/PEG feeding under professional supervision.
* Maintain clinical treatment environments and prepare patients for procedures.
* Collect blood products and escort patients to clinical departments or other hospitals.
* Assist the Registered Nurse in performing urgent tasks and provide verbal handover of care.
* Take general and clinical observations and report any issues to nursing staff, including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, respiration, oxygen saturation, peak flow and blood glucose monitoring.
* Document all care in patients' nursing records, ensuring counter‑signing by the responsible Registered Nurse.
* Initiate Basic Life Support techniques and assist in prolonged resuscitation as required.
* Contribute to the development of the Essence of Care and benchmarking.
* Ensure due regard to patients' customs, values and spiritual beliefs.
General Duties
* Promote effective communication within the multi‑disciplinary team.
* Manage aggressive or abusive behaviour.
* Prepare and maintain beds and linen according to ward protocol.
* Keep the environment clean and safe, including safe disposal of clinical waste and sharps.
* Report clinical incidents following Trust policy.
* Assist visitors and distressed or bereaved patients.
* Safeguard patients' valuables.
* Collect demographic data and social history for admission.
* Support new and junior staff.
Clerical Duties
* Perform clerical tasks in support of the Ward Clerk, including reception/telephone duties, basic computer use, and managing case notes and x‑rays.
* File documents and act as a messenger when required.
* Complete maintenance and repair forms.
* Monitor stock levels for stationary, ward provisions, linen and requisition as needed.
