This is an exciting opportunity to join our Paediatric epilepsy team on a short term basis to cover maternity leave. Epilepsy is a complex condition affecting 1 in 100 people, and a large percentage will have some other identified neurodevelopmental difficulties or disabilities. We welcome highly motivated applicants who understand the short and long term effects for the child, young person and their families.
You will be a core member of the paediatric multi-disciplinary team (MDT) to promote the health and wellbeing of children and young people and be an expert resource for children, young people and parents/carers.
The post holder will be responsible for the delivery of specialist care to the child or young person with a suspected/confirmed diagnosis of epilepsy and provide advice and support to their carers. You will work autonomously to manage your own caseload while contributing to a multidisciplinary team. You will participate in relevant local and national audits and apply recommendations to improve services.
Responsibilities
* Deliver specialist care to children/young people with suspected/confirmed epilepsy and provide advice and support to their carers.
* Manage an autonomous caseload while contributing to a multidisciplinary team.
* Develop expertise in the specialty, teach and support staff in clinical areas, undertake research and audits as required, and gather patient feedback to review and improve services.
* Act as a mentor to students undertaking nurse training and deputize for the Lead Nurse in her absence.
* Provide teaching, advice and practical support to families and other carers in the community setting; establish effective communication with children/young people using multiple communication styles.
* Work across acute and community settings, primary and secondary care, and partner with health and social care professionals to offer specialist clinical support and education.
* Travel across South Northamptonshire visiting children in their homes; participate in out-of-hours/weekend coverage as needed for end-of-life care.
* Take responsibility for transport between community services and have it reimbursed.
Qualifications and Skills
* Interest in Epilepsy or learning disabilities and understanding of short and long term effects for children and families.
* Effective communication, motivation, self-direction, and willingness to develop professionally.
* Ability to teach, mentor, and support staff; capable of undertaking research and audits; comfortable gaining patient feedback to inform service improvement.
* Ability to work autonomously with a caseload and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team.
