Consultant Endocrinologist

The closing date is 28 February 2026

This is a full time (10 PA) substantive post, but this is negotiable.

We are seeking a Consultant Endocrinologist, to join our dynamic team. We currently have 4 full time consultants, and 2 less than full time (6.2 WTE). This is a replacement post.

In addition to our consultant team, we have 2 Specialist Registrars, 1 Internal Medical Trainee, 1 FY2 trainee, 4 FY1 trainees and a clinical fellow. We are supported by a team of both Diabetes and Endocrinology CNS's.

The department covers the full range of diabetes and endocrinology, including:

* Pump therapy and diabetes technology
* multi-disciplinary transition service for both diabetes and endocrinology
* multi-disciplinary foot service with one of the lowest amputation rates in the South West
* multi-disciplinary pituitary disease clinics
* multi-disciplinary endocrine surgery clinics

The department prides itself on being a centre of innovation and is committed to continuous improvement.

The team have won various awards and strives to offer some of the best diabetes and endocrine care in the UK.

The team is well established and believes in a collaborative approach to both diabetes and endocrine care, and has strong relationships with various teams in both acute and community sectors across the ICB and wider region.

The department is actively involved in several multi-site diabetes trials and we are actively increasing the research activity of the department.


Main duties of the job

We are looking for an individual who will be an excellent team player, passionate about improving care for diabetes and endocrine patients and willing to embrace / lead new practices. We aim to be one of the highest performing centres in the UK and would welcome an individual that shares our ambition.

This job is a replacement post and the previous incumbent was lead for inpatient diabetes within the department. We have an excellent inpatient diabetes nursing team and the successful candidate will have an opportunity to work closely to develop this service. They will be given the time, resources and support to carry out this service development.

Job responsibilities

The holder of this post will be a Consultant with CCT in Diabetes and Endocrinology or within 6 months of achieving CCT.

The post will be based at the RUH and will include offsite working at community hospitals. The duties will include outpatient diabetes and endocrine clinics and foot clinics.

The successful candidate will also undertake diabetes clinics in the community both at a community hospital and within GP practices as part of an integrated service (often delivered virtually using MS Teams).

On average the clinics will involve seeing / speaking to 10-12 patients per clinic, though this will vary per clinic. Some clinics are done exclusively by telephone.

There will also be an opportunity to take on educational supervision of junior doctors if desired.

The inpatient General Internal Medicine (GIM) component will involve covering a 28 bed diabetes ward and occasional medical outliers (maximum 1-2 patients)/ Currently the ward commitment is a 1 week block every 6 weeks per consultant.

The post is 10 PAs (including GIM on call) but can be negotiable.

This post includes GIM on call duties. The GIM on call commitment is 1 in 24 paid at category B. Evening post take ward rounds take place between 5 & 8pm. The individual is then on call from home. This involves being available for telephone advice from 8pm 8am and occasionally being called in to review sick patients at the request of the medical registrar. There is a separate GI bleed, cardiology and elderly care take. At weekends (Saturday/Sunday) the on call physician is present in the hospital from 8am-8pm and is on call from home from 8pm-8am. These weekend shifts are currently 1 in 24 with time off in lieu but can be split if preferred.

At present there is no routine ward work commitment at weekends. There can be consideration given to time off in lieu for any additional work.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* MBBS or Equivalent
* Specialist Accreditation or CSST or Equivalent in DM and Endocrinology and GIM


Clinical Experience

* UK CCT in diabetes and Endocrinology
* At least 3 years at Specialist Registrar / Senior Registrar grade with experience in majority of diabetes / endocrinology subspecialties


Teaching Experience

* Evidence of support and supervision of foundation and IMT doctors


Management nd Administrative Experience

* Ability to motivate and develop junior medical staff
* Experience in clinical leadership roles


Clinical Experience (expert opinion)

* Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems within the specialty and for unselected emergency GIM admissions / inpatients
