Job Duties

Norfolk State University’s (NSU) Department of Sociology invites applications for a tenure-track position in General Sociology with a specialization in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) beginning August 2026. Appointment is at the rank of Assistant Professor, with a nine-month academic year appointment. We seek a teacher-scholar who integrates sociological theory and practice through the use of GIS, data visualization, and spatial analysis. The ideal candidate will support the department’s efforts to expand students’ technical skills and employability through applied research and data-driven approaches to community, policy, and urban issues. This position involves contributing to the growth of Sociology curriculum through innovative, applied instruction. The teaching responsibility is a nine-or twelve-hour course load includes Introduction to Sociology, Social Research Methods, Social Statistics, Urban Sociology, GIS for the Social Sciences, Social Problems and other courses expert to the candidate. Courses are primarily face-to-face, with occasional online or hybrid courses. Salary is competitive with other academic institutions of similar size, mission, and educational philosophy in addition to teaching, full-time faculty are expected to: Engage in research and publication consistent with departmental and university expectations, mentor students, particularly in applied research and data analysis, participate in departmental and university committees, contribute to student recruitment, advising, and retention activities, support collaborative initiatives with other departments and community partners related to data analysis, urban planning, and social policy.

Minimum Qualifications

1. A Ph.D. in Sociology or a closely related field (e.g., Urban Studies, Human Geography, Public Policy) is required.
2. ABD candidates may be considered if the Ph.D. will be completed by hire date, August 2026.

Additional Considerations

1. Demonstrated teaching experience in Sociology and/or GIS.
2. Evidence of the ability to integrate quantitative and spatial analysis into sociological research and teaching.
3. Experience using ArcGIS, QGIS, or comparable mapping software.
4. A research agenda aligned with social equity, community development, or policy applications of data science.
5. Commitment to teaching and mentoring students from historically underrepresented backgrounds.
