Are you an Operating Department Practitioner or Registered Nurse with an anaesthetic qualification looking for a new challenge?

At North Bristol NHS Trust we currently have 34 theatres, with a further 4 theatres in the new Bristol Surgical Centre elective hub. The theatres are supported by 84 medirooms and 4 traditional PACU facilities. We are a Major Trauma Centre and cover a range of specialties including Plastics & Breast, Urology, General, Gynaecology & Obstetrics, Metabolic & GI, Elective Orthopaedic, Neuro & Spinal, Vascular, Interventional Radiology, Emergency & Trauma.

You will be joining a well-established team with excellent support structures available to facilitate your career progression.

Suitable candidates need to be either a Newly Qualified ODP, Registered ODP or a Registered Nurse with a post basic Anaesthetic Nursing qualification.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will:

7. Participate in all aspects of clinical operating department work, and provide a high standard of patient care and safety in accordance with the North Bristol NHS Trust philosophy and objectives, policies and legal requirements
8. Deputise for the Team Leader when required/experience allows
9. Be involved in the assessment, development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care and work within a flexible team structure involving a multi- disciplinary team

10. Be competent in all aspects of anaesthetic technique and procedures.
11. Work as a skilled member of the perioperative team, and be responsible for the assessment of care given to patients within the operating theatre and other areas where an anaesthetic service is required.
12. Run theatre lists both efficiently and competently following policies and procedures.
13. Take responsibility in ensuring the safe, effective and efficient management of allocated resources within anaesthetics, including assisting with the planning of daily allocation of team members.
14. Be responsible for the care and maintenance of all anaesthetic equipment and consumable goods within your designated area. This responsibility will extend to all areas of the anaesthetic service and to inform the appropriate person of any stock/equipment requirements.
15. Take appropriate action in regards to faulty equipment as per Trust policy and participate in the ordering and training of new equipment
16. Ensure that the department is at all times clean and organised with sufficient supplies and equipment which are correctly cleaned, in working order and correctly stored.
17. Supervise the work of junior and unqualified colleagues in the assessment of patients and advise appropriately, providing specialist knowledge in assessing and interpreting acute and other patients conditions.
18. Take responsibility for personal and professional development, to be responsible for attending mandatory training sessions and to ensure that all policies and procedures are adhered to.
19. Support Theatre Manager in developing and reviewing policies and standards for the safe use of equipment and substances hazardous to health in the department
20. Have an understanding of scrub and circulating roles and to understand the responsibilities in these roles.

Person specification

Education/Training/Qualifications

Essential criteria

21. Registered ODP or Registered Nurse with recognised post graduate anaesthetic qualification
22. Evidence of ongoing professional development

Desirable criteria

23. Teaching and assessing qualification (998 or equivalent) or willing to undertake after 2 years post registration, general evidence of supporting learners

Work Experience

Essential criteria

24. Experience as a Registered Nurse (with anaesthetic qualification) or ODP across a range of surgical specialties
25. Evidence of having completed training for extended roles,. IV drug administration, cannulation, venepuncture, ECGs, male catheterisation pump training.

Desirable criteria

26. Experience as a Anaesthetic Practitioner within an acute perioperative environment

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Essential criteria

27. Effective communication skills, verbal & written, to include report writing and record keeping.
28. Excellent interpersonal skills with patients and multidisciplinary team.
29. Ability to contribute to team development
30. Sound knowledge of the guidelines set out in the NMC / HCPC code of professional conduct and current perioperative issues
31. Excellent organisational skills, proven ability to problem solve and remain calm under pressure

The successful applicant(s) will normally commence at the minimum of the scale unless they have previous NHS service at the same band. Progression through the scale is by annual increments.
