Senior Commercial Consultant – Utilities (Contractor)
Day rate: £500 per day Umbrella
Location: Remote (occasional on-site meetings as required)
Duration: 2 to 3 months contract with potential extension subject to project needs and progress
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Senior Commercial Consultant with deep expertise in the energy markets to lead a strategic review and refresh of the organisation’s energy procurement and trading approach.
This high-impact interim position will play a pivotal role in shaping future energy contracting models, ensuring financial robustness, and aligning with sustainability and net-zero objectives.
The key deliverable will be a Board-level paper on trading strategy options and future contracting timelines, with a draft due by the end of November 2025.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead a strategic assessment of current day-ahead and hedged energy strategies, identifying opportunities for optimisation.
* Review and recommend improvements to existing advisory and consultancy delivery models.
* Conduct early market engagement with potential service providers and benchmark against peer organisations.
* Refresh and align trading principles to market conditions and seasonal cycles.
* Support contract extensions and define principles for future delivery and transfer models.
* Assess the suitability of Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) and identify opportunities for green funding or energy grants.
Required Skills & Experience
* Minimum 5 years’ experience in UK energy markets, including trading, procurement, and commercial strategy.
* Proven financial and commercial acumen, with the ability to model scenarios and assess risk.
* Strong stakeholder engagement skills and the gravitas to influence senior boards and committees.
* Experience with contract negotiation and extension in the energy or utilities sector.
* Knowledge of frameworks, PPAs, and sustainability-linked energy strategies is highly desirable.
Additional Information
* Reports to the Head of Estates.
* Primarily remote role with occasional travel for meetings.
* Experience working within large, complex estates is advantageous.
* Chance of extension beyond the initial term, subject to project outcomes and progress.
