About The Role:
Working Days: Saturdays and Sundays 09:00 - 21:00pm
The Porter/Janitor is a dual-function role that combines front-line customer service with essential cleaning and facilities support across the University of Sussex. This role ensures a welcoming, safe, and clean environment for students, staff, and visitors. Responsibilities include assisting with inquiries, maintaining cleanliness in academic and residential buildings, supporting minor maintenance, and responding to emergencies. The role is vital in upholding the university’s standards of service, safety, and presentation.
As part of your role, your key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
* Provide information and assistance to students, staff, and visitors, and manage front desk operations including mail and package handling.
* Clean academic and residential buildings to a high standard, including restrooms, floors, and common areas, using appropriate equipment.
* Conduct regular safety inspections, including fire alarm tests, and respond to emergencies such as medical incidents or security threats.
* Identify and report maintenance issues, and coordinate with maintenance teams or contractors for timely resolution.
* Replenish janitorial supplies, manage cleaning product deliveries, and maintain tidy and well-stocked storage areas.
The ideal candidate should meet the following criteria:
* Must have Right to Work in the UK.
* A willingness to go through DBS checks if successful in this role.
* Ability to interact professionally with a diverse range of people and handle inquiries or concerns effectively.
* Previous experience in cleaning, porterage, or facilities support, ideally in an educational or residential setting.
* Understanding of COSHH regulations and safe use of cleaning chemicals and equipment.
* Capable of working both independently and collaboratively, with good time management and problem-solving skills.
* Physically able to lift and move loads up to 15kg, with a dependable and punctual work ethic.
