We are seeking an experienced and forward-thinking Head of Equine and Smallholder Nutrition to join our well-established and successful team.
In this senior role you will lead the nutritional strategy, product development, feed trials and technical credibility of our equine and smallholder feed portfolio, including sampling and the nutritional analysis of feeds in line with current legislation. The successful candidate will share our ethics and ethos to keep driving the company’s values forward.
This is a senior leadership role for a respected animal nutrition professional who combines strong scientific expertise with commercial awareness and industry influence.
You will be responsible for ensuring our feeds, both smallholder and equine, are scientifically robust, compliant, innovative, and aligned with the evolving needs of animals (particularly horses), owners, and the wider equestrian and smallholder industry.
Key Responsibilities
1. Manage an award-winning team of nutritionists and be responsible for co-ordinating our product customer service – before, during and post purchase
2. Ensure full compliance with relevant feed legislation, quality standards, and labelling requirements
3. Provide expert nutritional guidance and training to internal teams including sales, marketing, and customer services with particular attention to ensuring that the production of technical and marketing documents is in line with legislative requirements
4. Act as the company’s technical authority and external spokesperson on equine and smallholder nutrition, including but not limited to, writing nutritional articles for internal and external publications and marketing materials
5. Build and maintain relationships with key industry stakeholders, researchers, vets, and influencers, including but not limited to, attending relevant conferences to keep current with industry developments and report findings back to the Managing Director and the wider business
6. Deliver training and technical education internally and externally
7. Have strategic involvement with the Company Director in defining the company’s equine and smallholder nutrition strategy across all product ranges and researching the feasibility of potential new products
8. Oversee formulation, review, and optimisation of equine and smallholder feeds including running feed trials in-line with changing legislation
9. Other duties, as necessary, that may be required to effectively run your nutrition department
About You
10. Master’s Degree (or higher) ideally in Equine Science, Equine Studies, Animal Nutrition or Animal Management or a related discipline
11. Significant experience and outstanding technical knowledge of equine nutrition, ideally within feed manufacturing or a related industry – equine is essential, some smallholder (poultry, sheep, goats, pigs, cattle) preferable
12. Strong understanding of equine physiology, performance, health, and feeding management as well as direct leisure horse experience
13. Proven ability to translate science into practical, commercially viable solutions with excellent organisational skills, accuracy and attention to detail
14. Excellent communication skills with confidence presenting to both technical and non-technical audiences and proven customer service and people skills
15. Strategic mindset with strong leadership and influencing skills, with the ability to demonstrate creativity, drive and enthusiasm and proactively lead a team by example
16. Credibility within the equine industry is highly desirable
17. Computer literate with a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office
18. Full UK driving license required
Desirable
19. Postgraduate qualification (MSc/PhD) in Animal or Equine Nutrition
20. Experience in product development and feed formulation software
21. Familiarity with UK/EU feed regulations (or relevant regional legislation)
22. Existing industry network and public-facing experience
23. As this role covers both equine and smallholder feeds, in addition to equine knowledge and experience we are also looking for someone who can give nutritional advice for animals such as poultry, pigs, goats, sheep and cattle.
As this role includes giving equine nutritional advice over the phone, via email and at shows and events, the successful candidate will be approachable and able to relate to, and communicate with, colleagues and customers of all ages and backgrounds. They will also need to be able to write articles for internal and external publications so must have proficient writing skills and the ability to present nutritional lectures.

This role is office based – remote working is not available. You should reside within 45 minutes of our Norfolk Head Office.
