Coastal Ocean Modelling Scientist – National Oceanography Centre, Liverpool

Overview

We seek a talented and enthusiastic ocean scientist to join the Marine Systems Modelling group at NOC in Liverpool. The successful candidate will work on keeping our coastal-ocean modelling capability at the leading edge, through developing, testing and applying the NEMO (Nucleus for European Modelling of the Ocean) ocean model. Model developments will be motivated by and targeted towards improving our models of the NW European Shelf Seas, across a range of strategic research and operational oceanography projects, particularly in collaboration with the UK Met Office to support their operational forecast and reanalysis systems. The successful candidate will develop their own scientific research direction in this context (e.g. in air-sea coupling, near coastal processes and/or turbulent mixing), publish in appropriate high-impact journals and seek grant income. They will collaborate widely in the UK and internationally and participate in the international NEMO consortium. The role is expected to evolve, with the possibility of taking on a leading role managing a small portfolio of science projects.

Responsibilities

* Develop, test and apply the NEMO ocean model to coastal and shelf-sea applications, with a focus on NW European Shelf Seas.
* Collaborate with the UK Met Office to support operational forecast and reanalysis systems.
* Develop a personal scientific research direction in areas such as air-sea coupling, near-coastal processes and/or turbulent mixing.
* Publish results in high-impact journals and secure grant income.
* Collaborate with UK and international partners and participate in the NEMO consortium.
* Progress toward taking a leading role within the context, including managing a small portfolio of science projects.

Qualifications

* Experience in dynamical environmental modelling, preferably in an oceanographic context.
* Strong programming expertise, ideally in FORTRAN, and familiarity with high-performance computing.
* Understanding of ocean physics, particularly shelf-sea dynamics, is highly desirable.
* Strong first degree in a numerate science, engineering or mathematics discipline and a PhD or equivalent research experience in physical oceanography or related environmental science.

About NOC

We are the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) – the UK’s centre of excellence for oceanographic sciences. We operate as a national research organisation delivering integrated marine science and technology from the coast to the deep ocean.
