The role

With engagements across all technology departments and industrial sectors, the Senior Advisor works with manufacturing clients using the MTC structured engagement process. The role involves defining the current state of manufacturing operations and business performance, using assessment and mapping tools to capture opportunities for operational excellence and technology insertion to support business growth strategy.

As a Senior Advisor you carry influence and authority in the organisation. The MTC operates a matrix style structure with clear reporting lines; you will be supported by your Team Leader. Autonomy is core – you are expected to self‑govern, with proportional oversight.

You undertake innovative engineering research focused on progressing technology/manufacturing readiness levels (TRL7/MRL5), and demonstrate industrial project delivery across all TRLs and MRLs.


Main Responsibilities

* Lead large (>800 hrs) projects with manufacturing clients at their site(s) and remotely
o Take ownership to ensure work meets customer requirements, is delivered within agreed budgets and timescales.
* Deliver MTC Products & Services programs
o Manage stakeholders
o Manage your team to identify, explore and share relevant information succinctly
o Ensure a co‑ordinated scoping out of potential opportunities from a relevant range of disciplines for the deployment of manufacturing best practice and technology application
+ Include planning for and delivering workshops/sprints, facilitating both MTC & client resources in support of project deliverables
* Through MTC delivery methods, evaluate opportunities to define work packages with clear value propositions
* Deliver work packages from the resulting Transformation Roadmap that prepare the business for technology insertion, including:
o Manufacturing and operational best practice
o Defining capability enhancement
o Business process re‑engineering for innovation
o Coaching and mentoring for culture change and leadership
o Supply chain assessments and development/upscaling
* Train, be approved and function effectively as a Technical Governor on nominated projects
* Contribute to the MTC’s ongoing expectations for innovation and product development (Internal Projects – IMPs)
* Support the Technology Groups in work packages to develop technology solutions

Person Specification


Essential Skills/Qualifications/Experience/Attributes

* Good Engineering degree (2:1) and/or relevant experience within Nuclear and Advanced Manufacturing Sectors such as automotive, aerospace and defence.
* Experience in manufacturing as engineer, manager or director
o Minimum of 10 years’ experience within industry, including leadership and change management roles in a senior capacity
o Balance of theory and industrial application
o Passion for enabling and deploying technology into industry
o Hands‑on experience of deploying operation excellence tools and techniques
o Highly experienced with delivering manufacturing transformation projects
o Strong customer and stakeholder management skills
o Able to lead or collaborate across varying business levels and disciplines, sharing knowledge, providing guidance and technical advice, delegating responsibilities while ensuring accountability
o Coaching and mentoring junior staff
o Organisation and prioritisation skills to meet deadlines and resolve conflicting demands
o Experience of creating and/or developing supply chains
* Demonstrates and maintains a history of learning and personal development
* Persuasive personality, able to explain technical and manufacturing concepts to varying audiences
* Well‑developed problem‑solving abilities and strong analytical skills
* Ability to conceptualise new/alternative approaches, develop a program of work and package to form a robust solution/countermeasure
* Think out of the box, identify and resolve issues using a strongly analytical approach and challenge the status quo
* High‑level stakeholder management both internally and externally, demonstrating credibility and integrity in a customer‑facing role
* Commercially and financially astute
* Excellent decision‑making capability, able to manage multiple concurrent tasks and prioritise effectively
* Fully computer literate with Microsoft Office 365 tools
* Independent and driven self‑starter and completer‑finisher
* Excellent presentation and communication skills with technical information that is appropriate to the audience


Desirable Skills/Qualifications/Experience/Attributes

* Over 20 years of experience across multiple sectors and industries, strong focus on Nuclear and Advanced Manufacturing, senior management roles and delivery within engineering and manufacturing consultancy environments.
* Willing and able to maintain an appropriate level of security clearance
* Ability to absorb a wide range of developments in technology and see how these can add value to industrial sectors
* Demonstrated delivery of supply chain strategy, implementation and performance improvements
* MBA


Communications

The Senior Advisor role is critical in leading and guiding project stakeholders – the customer, 3rd‑party specialist technology partners and MTC resources – in defining and deploying technology associated with industrial projects. You must be articulate, comfortable working at all levels in a business from operators to executive teams.


Innovation

The Senior Advisor will identify opportunities for the application of manufacturing best practice, processes, methodologies and technologies for the solution of industrial problems, propose and lead new capability development projects aligned with the Department, Technology Theme and overall MTC strategy, and explore different routes for project funding (internal, industrial or CR&D). The role involves leading horizon scanning of technologies and new approaches to solving industrial problems across various sectors and demonstrates highly developed structured problem‑solving skills.
