EC&I Manager (Design) – Full-time role (40 hours per week). Salary: £75,000 - £85,000 per annum (depending on experience). Based in Stockport, Cheshire.

We are a growing SME design consultancy with 45 engineers and designers, supporting a wide variety of sectors, including whisky distilling, chemical, and pharmaceutical. With around 30 active projects at any time, our typical design project values reach up to £3 million in fees.
About the Role
The EC&I Manager (Design) will lead the Electrical, Control & Instrumentation discipline within the consultancy. This is a senior role combining technical leadership, people management, and commercial input, with responsibility for delivering high-quality EC&I engineering across multiple projects.
In the initial phase, the role will remain largely hands-on, with approximately 80% fee-earning project work, reducing over time as the department and workload grow.
Key Responsibilities
* EC&I Department Leadership: Line management of EC&I engineers, designers, and an apprentice designer
* Plan and balance workloads, track progress, and manage priorities
* Chair weekly team coordination meetings
* Conduct regular one-to-one meetings and annual performance reviews
* Mentor engineers, designers, and apprentices, supporting technical and professional development
* Promote a collaborative, ethical, and high-performance team culture
* Project Delivery & Governance: Provide EC&I leadership across assigned projects
* Work with Project Managers to align scope, resources, and deliverables
* Identify and mitigate technical and delivery risks
* Ensure EC&I designs are safe, compliant, and appropriate to the project stage
* Act as EC&I design authority for defined deliverables
* Implement and maintain checking and approval procedures
* Escalate complex or high-risk technical issues when required
* Technical Expertise: Review and integrate Electrical, Instrumentation, and Control designs
* Maintain sufficient cross-discipline knowledge to ensure design coherence
* Oversee hazardous area design in line with ATEX / BS EN 60079
* Provide functional safety oversight to BS EN 61511
* Ensure EC&I designs meet relevant UK, EU, and industry standards
* Guide designers and review technical outputs prior to issue
* Planning, Reporting & Performance: Participate in regular resource planning and management meetings
* Define and track EC&I department KPIs
* Report on performance, risks, and improvement opportunities
* Contribute to continuous improvement of processes and standards
* Commercial & Business Support: Provide EC&I input into proposals, scopes, and manhour estimates
* Support business development and identification of new opportunities
* Maintain strong commercial awareness and focus on value delivery
Skills & Experience
Essential
* Degree-qualified in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline
* Proven experience leading and managing engineering teams
* Strong background in EC&I engineering within process industries
* Experience acting as technical lead or design authority
* Sound understanding of project planning, cost control, and reporting
* Confident communicator with the ability to engage stakeholders at all levels
* Knowledge of relevant UK and EU engineering standards and regulations
Desirable
* Functional safety experience to BS EN 61508 / 61511 (e.g. TÜV certification)
* Hazardous area design experience to BS EN 60079 (e.g. CompEx Ex12)
