Environmental Scientist – Environmental Assessment

Shape the Future of Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development. We’re delivering nationally significant projects across the UK and Ireland, including peatland restoration, energy infrastructure, and environmental assessment projects. We are seeking an Environmental Scientist to join our Environmental Assessment team in Belfast.

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to high-profile projects that influence environmental policy, support nature recovery, and ensure that infrastructure development is delivered responsibly and sustainably. If you are passionate about environmental assessment, data analysis, and producing high‑quality EIA outputs, this role offers the chance to make a meaningful impact within a supportive, multidisciplinary, and forward‑thinking environment.

Purpose & Scope of the Role

As an Environmental Scientist, you will deliver Environmental Assessments and related services for peatland restoration and energy infrastructure projects. Your work will include the preparation of EIA Screening and Scoping Reports and the development of robust technical chapters for Environmental Statements. You will interpret complex environmental data, apply relevant planning and environmental regulations, and ensure that assessments meet statutory requirements and client expectations. While the role is primarily desk‑based, you will also attend meetings and workshops with clients and statutory consultees, and you will undertake occasional site visits or field surveys where required. You will work closely with colleagues across ecology, hydrology, planning, engineering, and GIS to deliver integrated, multidisciplinary EIA outputs of the highest quality.

Your Impact in this Position

In the short term, you will support the delivery of EIA screening and scoping reports and contribute to technical chapters across a range of active projects. In the medium term, you will take ownership of specific EIA components, coordinating specialist inputs and ensuring alignment with legislation, guidance, and project objectives. In the longer term, you will have opportunities to lead full EIA processes for complex and high‑profile developments, support best‑practice improvements, and contribute to shaping the future of environmental assessment within Tetra Tech RPS.

Your Toolkit for Success

At Tetra Tech, we recruit using core capabilities—the essential skills, experience, and responsibilities required to perform the role effectively. But here’s the secret: there’s no such thing as the perfect candidate. If you meet around 75% of the requirements, we’d love to hear from you.

Responsibilities

* Technical Expertise in EIA: Thorough understanding of EIA legislation, processes, and best practice. Experience preparing EIA screening and scoping reports, coordinating inputs from specialist disciplines, and writing clear and well‑reasoned technical chapters for Environmental Statements. Strong analytical skills to interpret environmental datasets, assess impacts, and translate findings into clear outcomes. Familiarity with peatland environments is highly advantageous.
* Stakeholder Engagement: Work with clients, regulators, and consultees to ensure outputs meet statutory and project requirements. Attend meetings and workshops, present technical information clearly, and contribute to engagement activities. Strong communication and relationship-building are essential.
* Project Delivery: Manage workflows, coordinate multidisciplinary inputs, and contribute to efficient project delivery. Excellent organisational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines. Support project managers by providing reliable technical input and ensuring workstreams progress smoothly.
* Teamwork: Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team delivering complex environmental assessments. Contribute to a positive team environment, share knowledge, and support problem solving across ecology, hydrology, planning, engineering, and GIS.
* Data Analysis & Reporting: Demonstrate analytical capability, interpreting complex environmental datasets and translating them into evidence-based conclusions. Manage large datasets, apply quantitative and qualitative methods, and ensure accuracy in reporting. Produce high‑quality technical chapters supported by robust evidence; GIS familiarity is advantageous.

Mandatory Requirements

* You will hold a Master’s degree in Environmental Science, Geography, Environmental Engineering, Hydrogeology, or a related discipline, or possess equivalent relevant experience. Experience in EIA processes—including screening, scoping, data analysis, and technical chapter authorship—is essential. Must be able to interpret environmental data, apply regulatory guidance, and work confidently within multidisciplinary teams to deliver high‑quality EIA outputs.

Desirable

* Experience working with peatland environments, restoration projects, or nature recovery programmes is highly advantageous.
* Experience coordinating EIA inputs across multiple technical disciplines, liaising with regulators, and using GIS or spatial analysis tools will strengthen your application.
* Experience delivering environmental assessments within consultancy settings is beneficial.

Work Patterns and Locations

The position is based in a large, permanent office on the edge of the city with on-site parking, strong public transport connections, and easy access to major road networks. The role supports hybrid working, with an expectation of two to three days per week in the office to facilitate mentoring, collaboration, and team coordination. Flexible working arrangements can be accommodated where project responsibilities allow. The multidisciplinary environment provides exposure to a wide range of significant projects, including marine, coastal, regeneration, and renewable developments.
