Purpose Of The Role

BBC Radio Suffolk is right at the heart of the local community. Based in Ipswich we are looking for a Senior Operations Engineer to support the technology used by our production colleagues. You’ll be enthusiastic, pro-active and a team player. Happy to work both in and out of the studio. This is a people-facing role, so you’ll need strong interpersonal skills, working effectively with colleagues and contacts from both technical and non-technical backgrounds.

Why Join The Team

The Senior Operations Engineer works across every aspect of the station. No day is the same. You will be part of a small team that supports each other and works together to get things done. You will be the “go to” person for colleagues on the station for anything technical and will be highly-valued and respected.

Your Key Responsibilities And Impact

Based at BBC Radio Suffolk, you will normally be working office hours on weekdays. You may be scheduled to work at other times, and support on other sites to meet operational requirements.

* As our sole on-site technical support in Ipswich, maintain a range of multimedia newsgathering, production, broadcast and IT equipment and offer technical advice to users.
* Be the on-site Outside Broadcast Engineer, helping to plan, organise and engineer events alongside local production teams.
* Report to the Team Leader, Operations Engineering, based in Cambridge.

Your Skills And Experience

Experience of broadcast engineering in a live transmission environment, combined with a good understanding of Broadcast & IT systems. Experience planning, organising, rigging and engineering complex outside broadcasts and public-facing events. This role is suitable for an existing Operations Engineer aiming to step up.

Essential Criteria

* Maintenance and repair of all broadcast facilities at Radio Suffolk.
* Main technical point of contact on site for all production and on-air staff; providing technical facilities, equipment and advice on-demand.
* Outside Broadcasts, from simple inserts to complex, station-wide events.
* Providing first and second line IT support, including patching studio broadcast PCs and rebuilding PCs/laptops as necessary.
* Proven ability to prioritise tasks by service impact and to work calmly under pressure.

Desirable But Not Required

* Ability to repair down to component level.
* Ability to program BNCS Scheduler and input into local use of the Dira broadcast audio system when required.
* Experience planning and engineering complex outside broadcasts.
* Experience submitting and approving IT Servicedesk requests.
* Engineering BBC Introducing sessions (live on Thursdays) from studio or live venues in Suffolk/Norfolk.

If you can bring some of these skills and experience, we’d love to hear from you and encourage you to apply.

Before your start date, you may need to disclose any unspent convictions or police charges, in line with our Contracts of Employment policy. This allows us to discuss any support you may need and assess any risks. Failure to disclose may result in the withdrawal of your offer.

For further information on the role please e-mail julian.keogh@bbc.co.uk, Operations Engineering Team Leader for Cambridge.

Redeployment

The BBC is committed to redeploying employees seeking suitable alternative employment within the BBC and they will be given priority consideration ahead of other applicants. Priority consideration means for redeployment candidates their application will be considered alongside others at risk of redundancy before non-redundancy candidates.
