Mechanical Engineer – New Product Development
Overview
An industry-leading provider of automated fermentation and cell culture systems is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to support new product development. This role focuses on bioprocess development, cell therapy, stem cell research, GMP manufacturing, and discovery research. The successful candidate will join a cross-functional engineering team and collaborate with Software Development, Product Management, Development Scientists, and Manufacturing to ensure product designs meet commercial and technical requirements.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead hardware design from concept to production release.
* Apply expertise across multiple engineering disciplines.
* Develop designs that meet cost, quality, and timeline targets.
* Conduct and participate in design reviews to ensure specifications are met.
* Work closely with build teams, design teams, and suppliers to implement and document design changes.
* Ensure smooth handover to Manufacturing for successful production release.
* Follow engineering processes to ensure high-quality product design.
* Engage with customers and Product Management to align system design with market needs.
Qualifications & Experience
Education:
* 2:1 degree or above in Mechanical Engineering or Systems Engineering with a mechanical focus.
Industry Experience:
* Proven track record in developing and commercializing complex systems or scientific instruments for low-to-medium volume manufacturing (up to 100 units per year).
Core Competencies
* Systems Engineering – Experience in developing complex hardware/software/electronics systems, preferably in life sciences or laboratory applications.
* Consumable Product Development – Designing components for automated equipment.
* Robotics & Mechanism Design – Expertise in materials handling and automation.
* Leadership & Teamwork – Experience leading small technical teams in equipment specification, procurement, build, and commissioning.
* Product Development Lifecycle – Taking designs from concept to prototype to full-scale production.
* ISO 13485 knowledge (preferred).
